Loss of power: Felicia 1.4

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My Felicia has been doing strange things. A couple of times recently the engine has died on the move, then after stopping and turning over the starter for a short while it has fired up and continued as if nothing had happened. Also I've noticed that on long hills in third or fourth it doesn't pull too well and is slightly jerky. Standing on the drive the motor runs sweet as you like. Any ideas?

Thanks

Michael L

Quite a common fault it appears, although it seems there are multiple causes - a weak fuel pump (or bad connection therein) seems to be the most common culprit, but others include blocked fuel filters, faulty crank sensors, or if it's an MPi possibly a faulty/dirty MAP sensor too.

Thanks. It is an MPi, so I'm guesing a diagnostic check is the only way forward without replacing parts unecessarily?

It would help identify a sensor issue - a dodgy crank sensor or MAP sensor should throw up a fault code in the ECU, even if it's intermittent. I don't think it would help much for fuel issues though, unless you were to log data with VCDS whilst driving to see if you could identify funny behaviour (in e.g. injection pulse duration vs. throttle position/engine load) that would indicate a potential fuel supply problem.

I've noticed a few people experiencing power loss since I posted this (of course it's a 1.3 not 1.4 by the way)so I thought I'd feed back what the answer was. A diagnostic check revealed a misfire on cylinder 3 caused by the coil pack breaking down. Put a new one on in minutes and problem solved.
