Weird rear wiper

Featured Replies

Hello - my first post.

My wife reported that the rear wiper on her 2002 Fabia had suddenly developed a mind of its own! For no apparent reason it would begin to sweep the rear screen. Sometimes it would make a single sweep, and sometimes it would make four sweeps. I took the car for a run, partly to check that she had not just left the stalk in the 'Down' position. I found that she had accurately reported the problem, but I also found that the rear wiper usually misbehaved as I turned left, although it would sometimes misbehave if I was driving in a straight line. I suspect that the problem is something to do with the wiper stalk, in that logic says the wiper motor is somehow being fed electricity when the steering wheel is moved anti-clockwise.

It has just started raining and looks as though it will continue for the rest of the day. I am therefore reluctant to start taking off the steering column shroud and poking around when I haven't much idea what I am looking for.

I am wondering whether there is a printed circuit board under the shroud for the wiper switch which could have become dirty, and thus allow current to track across and feed the rear wiper motor when the steering wheel is turned left.

I would be grateful for any pointers that anyone can offer me. I have looked for a thread on this but could not find one.

This seems to be just about the only wiper problem that cannot be solved by replacing Fuse 15 !!!

Could be a similar problem to the Octavia wipers and is caused by water leaking inside the rear wiper motor. Might be worth taking the motor out and seeing if it is full of rusty water. If so, the only real solution is a new rear wiper motor. You can dry them out and repack with clean grease, but this tends to only last for a while.

Welcome to Briskoda by the way!
