Tyres - VRS Estate

Featured Replies

Hi - I've just had the first service on my Octavia VRS Estate Diesel in Race Blue which I bought brand new in Jan 09 from Bickerton Skoda. When I picked the car up they informed me that the front tyres have just over 2mm of tread left and need replacing. They are currently on Dunlops but I must admit I was quite shocked as the car has just done has just done 11,800 miles and we are not talking hard miles !!!!.

This is my third VRS - I had 1.8 then 2.0 TFSI models which were on continental's and they seemed to provide better wear.

Anyone got any tips with which brand to replace the Dunlops with - or am I being unrealistic wanting a few more thousand miles out of the tyres

Thanks

Hello and welcome - Other than "not Dunlops" you mean? You're not the only one who can burn through Dunlops fast, without them actually being good at wet or dry grip, or even aquaplaning resistance.

I'd suggest having a look at the Autocar and Auto Express websites for recent tyre tests.

I'm not wild on Contis myself; they test well, but the tests are mostly on new(ish) tyres, and I know several people who report them turning to concrete at just over 3mm left (German tyre wear limit).

When I bought my vRS, it was fitted with Michelin Primacy tyres. They performed well overall in most conditions and were eventually replaced at 22,000 miles. I prolonged the life of the tyres by switching fronts to back and vice-versa about half way through their life.

On the strength of the report in Auto Express, I replaced them with Conti Sport 3's. The most obvious difference is less road noise, but they seem to be wearing more quickly and I will be surprised to see more than about 17,000 miles out of the set. The fuel consumption also seems to have been affected and on a long run, I seem to get a couple of mpg less than with the Michelins.

I have a BMW Z3 2.8 as a summer toy and on the strength of recommendations on the Z Roadster Forum, I fitted it with a set of Falken 452's, which have been quite remarkable. They hold on well in all but the most severe weather conditions and were fantastic value for money.

I have attached links to two websites, one giving user reviews of various tyres on a vRS and the other to a mobile tyre fitters, who seem to offer very competitive prices on tyres;
