Right, so after phoning my garage and booking a minor service for friday, I went out to take the green panel filter out for cleansing and noticed that the small rubber pipe that is supposed to be attatched to the air box was just hanging down the side of it so I re-attatched that and thought I'd check the oil levels etc, pulled out the dip stick and wiped it then re-dipped it and it came out with nothing, I am parked on the curb but I cant imagine it would effect it that much, while I was at it I was doing a general check around the engine, bearing in mind I had never had the engine cover off in the 7 months I've owned it, I noticed that quite a lot of oil was spilt on the top of the engine it seems to have leaked from the silver disc thing on top. I have no idea what this is, theres too many sensors and weird stuff in general for me to know haha.

Any way heres a picture. Is this an issue? It looks like it may have either leaked a while ago or is still leaking.

HELP! Is this something to worried about? I think it has something to do with a pipe coming from the intercooler into the engine or the other way round !?

looks like the egr valve

EGR valve - all look like this, mine is a bit oily but not that bad, spoke to a few dealers/service teams they all say the same, its normal.

+1 seems to be a fairly common thing now. Will either need replacing or put a delete pipe in. The latter is cheap but you will need to map the EML light out.

i have a spare one to suit an ASZ engine! PM me

no leaks....

a leaking EGR valve is not 'normal' im afraid lol

Well, my Ibiza FR TDI and my current car have a slight leak from it - all other PD engine cars i've seen do this?

don't be silly, i've owned 3 pd130's with egr valves and not one has leaked...

a leak of oil to me means a leak of air / boost which isn't good

Where would you suggest looking for air leaks?

Where would you suggest looking for air leaks?

well if theres oil around the egr valve then theres bound to be air?

the oil is leaking from the egr so that means air is leaking too under high boost, don't get me wrong it won't be massive amounts but it may add a slight whistle while on boost (possibly) and a drop of maybe a psi or two

Hmm, ok, best go look at the pipes etc joining the egr valve... I just took my technicians word as gosple...

tbh i don't know where it leaks from as i've never had a leak from there but black oil isn't good to me

Will have a butchers, if not will pop in to Skoda have a looksie.

is your's a BLT engine?

its a different set up to the ASZ engines... :)

Maybe I should have just asked what it is before anything :D

I happen to know a little bit about the EGR valve, just didn't know what it looked like, hmm? My car runs fine, no knocking or pinging from acceleration and idles fine so it's not gunked up, aparently it is normal for the valve to leak a little oil from the breather hole, the oil comes from the pcv system, obviously mine has been doing it since new and hasn't been cleaned so i'll give it a scrub and see how it goes. I'll hold you to buying the new one but don't hold it for me if someone else needs it as I may end up buying a delete pipe if it becomes a problem.

Cheers guys

i've had it in my shed for yonks, i had 2 non leaking ones at one point in time lol

Do you mean that wherever oil is leaking from could cause a whistle or the turbo could because I thought TDI turbo's do whistle because the impellor is so small and spinning at high rpm

no if there is a slight leak in the intercooler set up it can cause a boost leak which will equal loss of turbo pressure and would create a hissing / air escaping sound...

out of the egr it is probably very minimal if you can even notice, but as Tesco say... every little helps

So say I was to replace the EGR with a delete pipe would it be a direct bolt on and the intercooler pipe is connected to the pipe the oppsite end of the inlet? How easy are they to just remove and clean? Could it cause any problems?

you need to cut the collar of the existing top 90 degree bend that goes into the existing EGR valve and clamp it up with a jubilee clip!

removal and refit isn't the easiest as its quite tricky, the bottom allen key bolt is quite tricky, it isn't a hard complicated job you just need patience and small hands!

removal of egr and cleaning with carb cleaner and then refitting it wouldn't cause any problems, you'll be suprised at the crap thats inside it :o

Thanks for the heads up mate, I'll check it out on a spare weekend. Lets hope I don't bodge it otherwise I'll be on your back for the replacement, although it could take a week before it arrived to me as we're like opposite ends of the UK lol

Spoke to my local dealer - was told again that oil weepage from EGR is fine but if I was worried they could replace it... not keen on wasting money if it doesn't solve it.

Might get a new rubber O - ring and see how it is. Mines a BLT btw...

How much different are the two engines? I'm gonna get mine off either today or tomorrow and give it a clean so i can see just how much its weeping oil

Not an awful lot - few washers and stuff maybe :)

I want more washers :(

Pd160 installed. It's the start of an engine cleansing frenzy. The more I lift the bonnet the more I am discusted. Although my engine bay is pretty darn clean already :)
