I've got a notion about what may have happened, but need to know whether the key sticks as soon as you try to put the tip into the lock, or not until it's part-way down.

Is it an earlier car with a regular key or the later VW laser-cut type? Either way it does sound like it might be new ignition barrel time... :(

Part way down but id think the key goes in further than it did at first

i think it may be slider or maybe a ball bearing from the ver

y top of the cylinder

It's not what I thought then. I take it this is a "conventional" key, with a "sawtooth" on both edges, rather than one with a groove cut out of both flats?

This recently happened to mine, Had to replace the barrell,

same here thanks for all your help

it was destroyed inside and the sterring lock pin yoke was fractured so could have been dangerous if lock had come on whilst driving
