if i dont manage to get the key in the ignition can anyone advise on how to replace the ignition cylinder /barrel please??

Dropping the steering column to get access to it is dead easy - take off the lower cover then undo the 4 bolts holding it (note the order of the washers and spacers). The awkward part - for obvious reasons - is getting off the two shear bolts that hold the steering lock to the column. Some combination of chisel/drill/violence and a bit of patience should do the job - I know there have been some tips posted here in the past. Then it's just a case of popping the new one on.

a brand new set of the 3 sheer bolts for the steering lock/barrel is about £5 from the skoda dealer FYI

or use easiouts -just get one the right size .

(easiout -hardened steel LH threaded screw -drill hole in bolt, screw in in reverse mode and it SHOULD remove shear bolt)

I've never found shearbolts very tight, and any time I've done it ,I've use a small chisel or old hard screwdriver.
