Should I sell the Octavia?

Just after a little input after a chat with my local dealer.

I've had the Octavia since December 2009 and put on it only 8600 miles. This is due to being out of work for 6 months I've not really had the funds to be able to use it. I have manage to keep it thanks to the fact instead of going on the 0% finance offer I went for the low rate of finance and put a lower deposit down, thereby holding some funds in case of an emergency.

Starting work in Feb so all will be back to normal so the funding of it is not a problem anymore. BUT......after popping into my dealer for my usual chat (guy is really friendly) I asked about how much did he think the re-sale of the Octavia's have been effected with the VAT offers. To cut a long story very short he believes that the diesel are going up in price and there should be no reason I should not get back what I paid for it or at least only be down a £1000 after a year of ownership, tough best case would be to actually sell for more to which the view was that is might be possible if I find the right person.

Now that is very tempting to run a car for a year (a new one) and be in the possible position of not getting hit for the usual new car loss.

If I was to do it I know the only new car I could go to spec for spec is the Octavia vRS in petrol form (diesel in same spec is now £27k with no dealer discount), but would I miss the diesel? Or should I not bother and just get something cheap and simple (I would miss the features of the Octavia).

I'm sure I'm not the only person thinking this and knowing my luck it probably will not work but its something that I'd be silly not to think about.

Firstly do you mean December 2010?

My humble opinion is :-

Just over 8000 miles a year why do you need a diesel?

No you wont miss it, I changed from diesel A4 to petrol VRS DSG and love it.

If you can sell it for what you paid or more DO IT and reorder a petrol version 10 to 12 weeks delivery, use any saving to get the DSG. (Ask any buyer if they want mine as well!)

Run it for another 12 months at least and then see what its worth, It sounds like you already want to keep it :thumbup:

I was thinking that but even though I liked the fabia vRS on the test drive (it wasn't a long one though) it didn't make feel special where as the Octavia did. Maybe a longer test drive is needed?

Ollie......Yours kind of right there is nothing wrong with the Octavia I do like it but my stupid brain is saying why not whilst you have a chance to not get hit by depreciation.

Plus other thought is the 2.0CR at the moment is not as tuner friendly as the 2.0TSI. To remap the CR its a ecu out job where as the TSI is still plug and play (unless that has also changed). Which means I could go down the route of SPS or alike.

I will go out on a limb and say the dealer is talking *******s, unless you got one hell of a discount to start with there is no way you will sell it for anything like you paid for it. Did the dealer offer to give you a cheque there and then ,go back into the dealers, shake his hand and say sold.

Problem with replacing it with a petrol VRS is that that will then take a massive hit in value, as the petrols are still on the VAT free deal. You'd be better off keeping the diesel which will be worth more in the long any way, as diesels tend to hold their value more than petrols. Unless you really don't like your current car, I would stick with it.

you make a valid point hence why I'd thought I'd make this post, its always good to get another view on it.

I've never had a car (apart from budget bangers) where I've used for a year and sold for the same or more, so I guess the thought of it on a new car was rather appealing :giggle:

Stick with the CR, add a number of mods to make it your own, then you won't want to sell it :thumbup:

Just because you can get back what you paid for it, it doesn't mean that it's a good idea to sell!

Think about it logically. You're not talking about selling it and doing without a car, so you need to buy something else.

The things you're talking about buying are all new so you will be hit by the depreciation that you have so far avoided on your current car.

The sensible thing to do is keep it and congratulate yourself that you've done a miracle and avoided the first year depreciatrion completely.

What you're saying is basically "My car hasn't depreciated in it's first year, should I spend some money to replace it with something almost identical that will loose a lot of money over the next year?"

If you really desperately want that new car feeling again then yeah go for it, but it makes zero financial sense.

On the topic of buying a diesel when you're doing e.g. 8k miles a year, I get bored of trying to explain this to people.

It doesn't matter how many miles you do a year, a diesel saves you money for every mile you drive so it's how many miles you do over the whole time you own the car.

The fact that the OP is proving that the diesel has far stronger residuals than the petrol is only strenghtening this further.

I've basically done over a year 8.6k but thats mostly in the first 6 months, the last 6 months I've only used it once or twice a month (whole of december is was over road over the snow etc). But this year I will probably cover alot more.

True brimma, already have the grill that I'm refurbing and colour coding.

You weren't the only person thinking this! Mine's the same age as yours, but with 20k on the clock...

We're looking at moving house, one of the ones we really liked was down a really rough single-track road, felt like the vRS was going to fall apart if I did it on a daily basis, so had been considering swapping to a petrol Scout or 4x4. Looking at Autotrader the diesel Octy vRSs in a similar spec to mine were selling for around £1-1.5k more than I paid for mine a year ago, so after the dealer taking their cut probably a loss but not that great. Luckily the house fell through, so left me without having to make the difficult decision, however I was surprised to find that you can't spec a petrol DSG on those other models, would have missed it too much to have gone ahead with it methinks!

I would stick with it. While appealing, I think it's a false economy overall.

I think you'll also be better off in the long run, whenever you come to sell, as I think the diesel will be easier to sell and hold its value better.

How is it killing your pockets? Servicing is the same price and more MPG with the diesel so lower running costs?

Going back to the OP - I would consider selling mine but wouldn't know what to replace it with....Don't think i could justify going to 30MPG with a petrol TBH...

Only you can decide.

Maybe it's because you haven't been working for the last few months and as you said,i have not had the funds to use the car much.This could be adding to the reason why you are thinking of getting rid.It sounds a bit pointless to me to sell the car only to replace it of a similar vehicle.Once you start back to work next month and start earning again so you are able to enjoy the car more,you may think different about it.Give it a couple of months from being back in work,if you still feel the same then go ahead and sell..

Up to you, but it only makes sense if you sell it, buy a much cheaper car (to buy and run), then keep the remaining cash.

If you swap to something that costs more per mile to run (either fuel or depreciation) then, as others have said, it makes absolutely no sense at all.

I think that you have all made brillant points and I'm glad I posted this on here before I made and choice. Thinking about it Dolla has hit the nail on the head, its been a tough 6 months as I've basically done everything I can to keep the car and alike, which has meant not doing much.

I guess its just good to know that after a year of motoring there is a possibilty that I could walk away with out it actually have lost any money as such.

Just proves how far Skoda have travelled, 10 years ago if you had said there is a 6 month waiting list for a skoda and you could run one for a year with out a massive loss you would have been laughed at.
