urgent: Exhaust Control light on

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just came out of work and on the way home one of the lights from the dash didn't go out. I thought it was the engine management light (looks like an engine block) but looking at the manual it said 'Control system for exhaust'. I am about to go on a 150mile drive to see family but this warning light has me spooked. car was fine driving to work, no lights on so when I started it to drive home i was surprised when this light didn't go out.

I do a lot of short journies during the week, with a long drive at the weekend (300 mile round trip, all motorways).

Any advice or suggestions? :(

Cheers guys

edit: I have no loss in power, economy isn't great but I do a lot of short journeys which is what I put it down to. Is it alright to drive on without risking making it worse? :(

DPF regen? You need to drive it harder!

Could it be? I am about to go on a long ass drive, but am scared of driving any faster then bare minimum incase it makes it worse! Please let me be able to boot it... ''because i have to''! :p

If it is the DPF, then that's exactly what you need to do. But I don't have a DPF, so I can't confirm if the light you've seen IS the DPF, which means you'd probably better check the manual again to be sure...

The manual states a different warning light for the DPF! :(. This one is specifically listed as the 'Control System For the Exhaust'

Not that then. How does it drive? Does it feel like it's in "limp mode"?

Hope, no limp home mode. Drives fine as far as I can tell. Garage where I'm at atm is going to have a look! No idea what to expect!

Fingers crossed it's nothing serious, then...

You were right in your first assumption, its the Check Engine Light also called Engine Management Light , its just the bad translation from Czech to English in the manual.

You need to get the fault codes read by someone with a code reader, ideally VCDS. Check the VCDS map thread for your area in the diagnostics forum to see if there is anyone near to you who would be prepared to read the fault codes for a few beer tokesn.

Took it to a local garage and they read it off, main one (one he thought was causing the issue) was the DPF sensor, around £45 part and £55 to fit. He cleared the fault, and *touch wood* it hasn't come back. Did the long drive keeping to a steady 70-85mphs and it didn't rear its head again. Parked the car up and will check on it in the morning, but touch wood the long drive cleared a weeks worth of short journeys out of the system. Will have to take the car for a mid week spin up the M23 to run the system up to temperature and keep my fingers crossed I don't have a repeat! :)

I think that's the exhaust pressure sensor. Seems to be a very common problem. Apparently the replacement parts are to a revised design (water ingress problem?) so you should be OK now the jobs been done.

Not had it fitted yet, he didn't have any in stock. Going to leave it for now and see if it comes back, if it does Ill get it replaced! :)

Spot on. Had this with mine but fixed under warranty. Car can be driven but it's in limp home mode and won't rev very highly.

For what it costs I'd get it replaced ASAP. Its not going to get better on its own and could drop you into limp-home at an awkward time.
