Road Tax and Insurance question

Featured Replies

I am picking up a car tomorrow for the sister in law its her first car just wanted to ask this as it is from a garage and at the moment is untaxed if the garage taxed this from the 1st feb would I be able to drive this car back tomorrow (31st Jan) or will it have to be taxed from tomorrow in which case I have lost a whole month with it being the last day of the month.

I just want some clarification as the post office will stamp the Tax disc with tomorrows date.

The other thing is insurance I have got some one day insurance cover as my sister in law is going to garage the car until she can save up for her insurance with this one day cover am i likley to get stopped as I dont know if it will show up as insured on the insurance data base. I have bought this cover to start from tomorrow at 1pm and just checked on the ask mid site and it shows up not insured.

The reason for all these questions is that on the way back home there are fixed AMPR cameras and ones on the motorway so want to make sure everything is legal.

Tax Disc will be valid from 1st of Feb, and not a minute sooner. So if the car is currently untaxed then it can't legally be driven.

Single Day cover does NOT show on the website, but as long as you have the policy with you, you shouldn't have a problem if you are stopped. Suggest if you are stopped you are very polite and helpful.

As Llanigraham says, but there is something else you/she needs to be aware of.

If she is not going to insure that car immediately she will need to declare SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice). It is now a requirement that all vehicles must be insured at all times unless they are declared as off road via SORN. If she doesn't declare SORN or insure it she will get a nasty letter from the DVLA & that could be followed by a fine.

Whats the point in this as the car will be taxed, so what you are saying is we have to tax it for the one day we are bringing it back, and then declare it as sorn in which case what happens about the tax disc she has just paid for. All this red tape

Surly it doesn't have to be insured if she is going to just keep it in the garage until she gets insurance in march or April as the tax disc will still be valid.

Personally I have never done a sorn - is it easy to declare as sorn and how and more importantly how do you get it out of being sorn when the time comes to get insurance.

Thanks everyone.

How would she declare the car as sorn when the garage will send the logbook back does she have to wait for a tax reminder or would she be able to sorn it soon as possible.

Glad I came on here now to check things over with you guys.

If you drive it on the road on the 31st it has to be taxed and insured on that day.

If it is taxed and she insures it from the 1st then it can be kept on the road.

If it is taxed but not insured and kept on the road it can be removed, scrapped and the owner fined.

If it is being kept on private ground, then it does not have to be taxed or insured but must be declared SORN. Failure to do so will result in an automatic fine when you do next tax it.

If it is taxed on the 1st for you to bring it home, and then put into "storage" then you can return the tax disc and apply for a refund, less that month's fee, and declare it SORN.

Go to the DVLA web site, there is a simple guide to how to SORN.

If she is buying the car from a garage why not ask them to deliver ot to you on their trade plates, as this will stop all the problems.

Don't forget, even a car parked in a garage should ideally be insured for at least fire and theft, even if not being insured for use on the road, unless it has little value. If it catches fire or is stolen, the purchase cost is lost. It certainly won't be covered by the house insurance.

Thanks guys, I think we will Tax from tomorrow, bring it home using the one day insurance and then put it into the garage then declare it as sorn then send the tax back for refund then when she has the deposit for insurance re-tax the car then all should be fine.

The only reason doing it this way is because her insurance for a 1 litre corsa is £1,789 per year and requires a deposit of £365 but she will save for that and insure at a later date, just the car was to good to miss out on waiting around.

I cant get over how young people are getting such high premiums.

Thanks again
