Clutch pedal stays down on cold days until manually lifted

Featured Replies

This has happened on 3 occasions at temperatures of -8, -5 and recently at -3. The car starts and drives as normal with no problem with gear changes then at various distances from starting ( 500yds to 4 miles) the clutch pedal upon being depressed stays down preventing any further gear changes. If the pedal is then pulled up the problem never re-appears on that journey.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Thanks

Could be a faulty clutch master cylinder (not too uncommon).

My old Fabia clutch pedal used to drop to the floor over night when it was really cold. I replaced the master cylinder and never had the problem again.

Problem can also be induced (not sure why) if the clutch has been changed. Certainly that was the case, after my clutch was changed by the (non-vag) dealer I bought the car from.

Not sure why it would do it only once per journey but id get the master changed

I thought it strange it didn't happen immediately and also that once I pulled the pedal up it never re-occurs on that journey. I will look into the master cylinder.

Thanks

I've seen this a few times, and I always start by changing the fluid which usually does the trick. It's worth a go before you start changing the clutch master and slave cylinders.

I had same trouble a month back. Clutch Slave Cylinder was the problem. Independant garage charged me £148 all in.

It's an issue with the master cylinder, changing the fluid will help short term which is why a slave would seem to sort it normally.

Agreed!

Its normally the seals that break down in these and the bit in there cause the problems along with the fact that it doesnt seal correctly anymore and lets the fluid past, hense the pedal staying down

Changing the fluid night work short term but there is still going to be an issue eventually

Best get it done while it works of sorts, or else you might loose you clutch altogether

Brilliant thanks! Any good independents near Pembrokeshire, West Wales?

Wouldn't mind having a go myself but a bit wary of not having the car for work.
