Felicia Hatchback towbar on estate?

Featured Replies

Is it possible ot fit a hatchback towbar to an estate?

If not, what's the difference between the two?

Cheers,

Rob.

The rear chassis members have a kind of curved and angled shape at the back, and the estate has some straight box-section extensions welded onto the ends of these, so the relative attachment points are completely different. I've double checked some fitting instructions (Witter) and this is indeed the difference - the mounting plates of the hatchback bar are angled inwards and attach to the outside of the chassis members with horizontal bolts, whereas the mounting plates for the estate bar are parallel and attach to the inside faces with both horizontal and vertical bolts, so they're definitely not interchangeable.

I suppose you could in theory fit a hatchback towbar to an estate in its 'proper' position, but I don't think having a towball hidden about 9 inches behind the bumper would be very useful :D

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the info. So the estate towbar bolts to the insides of the extended chassis legs that are not present on the hatchback?

Do you have an electronic copy of the instrctions you could send to me?

I have a 3 year old towbar on my hatchback, (that is due to be scrapped) and I can't face throwing it away and buying a new bar for my estate, (given the price of them!)

Might have to get the welder out....

Essentially, yes.

Here's the instructions I was looking at:

I don't have a good picture of the underside of a Felicia estate, but I do know there's plenty of room to just stick your head under and have a look! :D

Thanks Robin, that's great.

I'l see if I can find someone in the reverse of my situation to swap with but if not it's going to be a welder job.
