Is Lamin-X legal?

Our coloured/tinted headlamp protection films may not be legal for road use on primary lighting in your country. An off-road use disclosure is hereby declared. Please check your local laws before application if you have concerns. Installation of our tinted protection film on your head lights or fog lamps is done so at your own risk.

The law/Mot hand book within the UK states that front primary lighting must produce a White or Yellow light. There is no documentation about the colour of the actual lens.

Our Clear/SubtleTint/GunSmoke/OpticBlue light protection films all produce a legal natural light colour, and our Yellow produces a Yellow tinted light which is of course perfectly legal within the UK.

None of our light protection films change/adjust the beam pattern or cause insufficient light output.

I want to find something I can print out and keep in my car ready for a jobs-worth copper. If anyone can find something please link me.

I kinda wasnt when I was with luke the other day, I read somewhere that as long as the beam pattern is correct and the light emmited is either yellow or white its all legal... Maybe thats old rules. I got told to remove mine and upon failing he said I MUST do it before dark as if another officer sees me with it then my car will have to be towed and ill have to get a new MOT.

was that on your headlights i take it? when i had some on my old car it passed the mot because the reflectors still worked.

In fairness Ross your headlights are a LOT darker than 'subtle tint' Lamin-X...

I suppose you couldn't really argue as you had just cut up undercover Police lol, but if it was a routine check I'd be questioning them a lot more. I still want something in my car to show them if it happens to me though.

I really like the effect on that Focus. Easily does enough to temper the chrominess (if that's a word) of the lights.

I had the darkest flys eye kit on n never got any trouble. I'm thinking of going lamin x though.

But flys eye effected the light output quite slot so would like to know if lamin x does?

I've got my lights covered in the darkest lamin-x never had any problems, had two MOT's since putting it on..

However it does reduce visibility at night quite a lot :(

I think anyone who deliberately reduces the light output, especially from the rear lights is a twerp; personally I wish my light were twice as bright!!!

As for it being ok cos its passed 2 MOTs, some MOT stations just dont care, I have seen the same chavy Clio with lenses darkened so much you cannot see the brake lights except at night; driving around for about 3 years; Ditto a Freelander with Silver on Black number plates.

I would.. but that's illegal too lol.

the black inserts do make it look loads darker!

I'm thinking of going for the subtle tint too but i don't know if it would be too dark

whilst on the subject of lamin-x does anyone know how much you need for the taillights?

How easy is it to remove this stuff once its on? I ask as if the car fails its MOT because of the tint and you can quickly peel it off its no harm done, but if its a PITA to remove then thats something else.

It's a bit of a legal grey area with tinting lights - how much light is enough? Personally thought I tend to think with lights, the clue is in the name. And printing anything out to show to a 'jobsworth copper' might not go down very well, in fact it might make a said 'jobsworth' look a little more closely at your car or possibly even give you a ticket rather than advice.

have you seen the picture of the focus? IMO that is very subtle and most people would think it was standard.

I think Lamin-X can look pretty OE myself. If it's applied carefuly and trimmed well.

Over the years I've seen lots of different cars with part smoked rear indicators and tail lights

as standard fitted parts. Ford, Renault, Vauxhall and even Mercedes spring to mind as manufacturers that

have made some cars with smoked rear segments on the factory rear lamp clusters.

My old G reg Sierra Hatch was bog standard and had a smoked effect on the rear lights.

Even the OE side repeaters on the vRS are slightly smoked as standard.

As long as it's subtle and applied well it can add a distinctive touch to any vehicle.

Gunsmoke LaminX part tinted. This is the darkest variety.

You can still easily see into the cluster through it. Photos taken with phone cam. no flash.

I think it looks great and doesn't impede light output significantly enough for all the fuss.

When I recently moved to Bristol, I was following my car (driven by Mrs Grr) all the way from

London while I drove a Luton. I could easily see the turn signals up close and from distance

and I've put the car in reverse (engine off, ignition on.) and had a look and the lights appear white to me.

It's in for an MOT at Streetwise Automotive in Bristol tomorrow. We'll see if it passes.
