Fabia locking/unlocking randomly

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I have a Fabia... it is great. But my sister AND bro's wife both also have Fabia's (because they're so great I recommended it to them them both!) but they both have the same problem. The cars will randomly lock and unlock themselves - doesn't matter if the car is running, stopped, locked, unlocked, parked in a garage... whatever. They just randomly take a cycle of locking and unlocking the doors. My Fabia doesn't have this problem but its strange that the other two do. Neither of them have remote locking - just central (with the key).

Does anyone know what is causing the problem - its obviously not the key fob because they only have central locking. I was considering changing the panel inside the drivers door card which controls the locking & windows to see if maybe moisture was short circuiting the electronics in this panel? Has anyone tried this before or do you know if the problem comes from somewhere else like the locking solenoids or something??

The car can lock and unlock at any time so its not great for leaving in a multistory carpark... or when you leave the keys in the ignition!!! Any help would be appreciated before my Sister & bro's wife team up and beat me up for recommending the car!! :S

Thanks,

Andrew

I had the same problem in my old Polo.

It was caused by the lock mechanism being full of gunk after years of build up, and the pins in the barrell were basically stuck in the "unlock" position. Any movement in the barrell caused the car to lock and unlock.

If the Fabia is the same, you can remove the handle from the door relatively easily, then remove the lock barrell. It took a fair bit of careful disassembly and cleaning, but I never had any problems since then.

Softscoop, thanks for the quick reply. I never thought of the actual key barrel in the door... I will check that out. Cheers.
