Audi and VW win Whatcar Car of Year and Small Family car with A1 and Golf TSIs OK with that.

but .....

Mondeo win best Family Car with its 2 litre diesel???

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What???????

A tired old model with a very mediocre Citreon-Peugeot engine. I can think if a dozen better Family Cars than this ie Superb, A4, Exeo, Passat, 3 Series, C Class, Accord, Mazda 6, practically anything except an Insignia in fact IMHO.

lol

My Dad has a Mondeo and it is superb, so refined. He has owned various cars in his 60 years of driving an agrees that the Mondeo is one of the best.

I agree.....never met anyone who has disliked owning a Mondeo. Never heard a bad word against them either...

Octavia 1.4 TSI should have taken this over the Mondeo IMO, it is quicker, roomier, cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, better made but for some reason it has always been put in the small family category, presumably because the chasis comes from the Golf.

Mondeo's roomier than the Octy - the Golf underpinnings are none more apparent than when you're sat in the back, which is what keeps the Octy in the small family category.

I'd also question whether the Octy is actually better made...I doubt it's any worse, but I'd be surprised if there a significant differential between the two.

The Octy 2 has loads of leg room unlike the Octy 1 but I would give you that the Mondeo is probably a few cms wider in the cabin. The Octy2 hatch has a bigger boot by about 30 litres I recall than the Mondeo. It is the engine I do not particularly like, the PSA engine feels lumpy and heavy compared to other 2 litre diesels, (good CO2 though at 139g/km), produced by other manufacturers and their petrols are weak and uneconomical. This will hopefully change when the Bridgend plant starts to biuld engines in the TSI format, only 5 years behind VAG. Of all the US car makers Ford deserves to be the one that survives but they are technically half a decade behind BMW, Merc and VAG on their manufacturing techniques and most people would rather have a German (and I include SEAT and Skoda) on their drive IMO.

Although Ford still retains a higher %age market share than any of those manufacturers - yes, most likely down to fleet sales rather than people wanting to part with their own cash for them, but nonetheless they're still selling more cars.

Besides which, most Fords are made in either the UK or Germany - so if someone would prefer to buy a car based on where the parent company is located rather than where the cars are actally made, they're probably missing a trick. :D

I would not say the Octy is any better build quality wise, and it's certainly down on equipment levels, but what do I know, I have a 2011 T27 Avensis, and that's better then both :) imho of course :)

What is a Avensis T27??

Great that it is made in Derbyshire, I wish that VAG biult cars in Britain. Did/Do they make a 180 hp diesel? Have not noticed many on UK roads, most go to EU suppose.

I love my Octy2 1.8 TSI, loads of torque, 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, 40 mpg, fantastic 7 speed instant change gearbox and with mine all the L&K extras, Adaptive Xenons, Alcantara interior, electric drivers seat, paddle gear shift, bluetooth phone with steering wheel controls, the list is long and all with the VAT deal taking 15% off. Less than £20K on the road, could not find anything close to it last year when looking/buying.

I don't know how many of you read the motoring press, but the lastest Mondeo has been praised continuosly since it came out. It has beeen credited as being better than a BMW but let down by badge snobery. Tbh it's not the type of car I'd go for, I dont like the looks, but each to their own.
