Engine swap

Featured Replies

Yo!

If I swapped one AEE for another AEE, am I going to have to keep the ECU and immobiliser with the engine, or can I leave them in the body? (without mucking around with VAG-COM etc)

Cheers

Alex

The engine's just a dumb lump of mechanicals - as long as the ECU gets readings that are within operating range it's happy regardless of what's generating them. Unless you suspect there's actually a fault with the ECU there's no need to swap it, just unplug everything from the old engine and plug it back in once the new one's in place. The only thing worth noting is that the learned values will need resetting to match the (almost certainly) slightly different characteristics of the new engine, but having the battery disconnected for long enough to do an engine swap should take care of that anyway, and after half an hour or so of driving it'll have readapted.

keep them with the car.

Thanks guys :-)

Looks like the slightly dodgy-fun could be getting itself a new engine soon then. :-)

The company has a van-plus, complete with hen-hut on the back, that probably won't make it through its next MOT as it needed a lot of welding last time. The engine though is in good condition. Thinking of doing an engine-swap as my other Fun's body is not in bad nick really. (The rear arches only have surface rust on the loadspace side and nothing on the wheel side) Good body + good enginer (should)= good all round :-) :-)
