Garaged over winter...

Featured Replies

Hay all,

Just a few tips required really,

The Fabia has been in the garage for a few weeks now (keep it off the salty roads and preparing for the engine swap) I have also bought a felicia for day to day use, meaning that the fabia will be seeing almost no time on the road. I tried to start her up yesterday and the (6 month old) battery was as flat as a pancake. I tried charging the battery with the car connected and the smart charger I have wouldn't put any charge into it (went into fault mode), got around this by disconnecting it from the car and it did begin to recondition the battery. However, this got me thinking, should the battery go that flat in just over 3 weeks? I do have an aftermarket alarm and an ariel that constantly had a red LED on but would those things run a battery down? Why wouldn't it charge the battery with the car connected?

Also, there is quite a lot of moisture under the bonnet, despite being in a garage, should I worry about this? and finally (thanks for bearing with me) are there any other precautuions I should take if the Fabia is to stay in storage for a while?

Thanks a million folks,

Duggie.

you should stick it on axle stands and remove the battery

then lock the garage!

Park it up with the handbrake off but in gear so it doesn't roll anywhere,

Disconnect/take the battery off which ever you wish,

Lock the doors if you want,

Lock the garage up

Can't really add much to what's been said, but you mentioned an engine swap...care to tell? :smirk:

1.8T AUQ out of an octy VRS... no asking when it's going to be done because I have little money, almost no time and I have no idea!

Thanks very much guys, got her going yesterday night and all seems fine... just a low point in the battery!

If it is an old aftermarket alarm, then yes it will drain the battery. My father suffers from that problem with his old Subaru. How old is the battery? If it is more than 5-6 years old then it's probably past it's best, so time for a new one.

The charging fault may be down to the manufacturer of the charger. We have a CTEK one and I'm sue it recommends that it's disconnected from the car when flat and in recon mode. I don't know if this would cause the fault mode though.
