Running in TSI?

Featured Replies

So I've taken the plunge and ordered a new 1.8 TSI. B)

This being my first ever new car, will I need to run it in, or is this not required with modern engines? Do Skoda offer any guidance?

Cheers,

Phil

Not sure what the official line is on this but I was steady for the first 1000 miles with my 2.0 TSI and then opened her up a bit!

I think they do ie no full throttle unit you have 600 miles on the clock and then no substained full throttle until after 1000 miles.

Good idea to let oil temp get to at least 50 C, some 1.8 TSIs have oil temp gauge not sure if all.

Done 6K in mine in 2 months. Performance is fantastic, same EA888 engine as in the VRS just sleeved down. Some say makes equivalent of 170 hp but Skoda wanted to differentiate between VRSs and it. Same top speed as diesel VRS but gets there about 3 seconds quicker well at least to 100 mph when one should be saying "licence"!

I get 40 mpg, 50 when making an effort but most others, who presumably live in the stop start SE and the like, only get down in the 30s. Love it. We have a TSI VRS on the drive too but I still prefer taking the 1.8 TSI DSG L&K it does everything so well. Only wishes are for a bigger fuel tank and better front end traction but then it came with Bridgestone RE050 which are a bit rubbish compared to the Mich PS3s on the TSI VRS we have or the Contis on the Octy1.

Running in?

Well I have traveled on a Grimaldi line car carrier that held 5000 vehicles being delivered around various ports. This ship had BMW/Mercedes loaded onto it for delivery to the UK and some med ports. Likewise on the way back it picked up Alfa Romeos for delivery to the UK.

The way I witnessed cars getting driven up the dockside was downright criminal, cars were 'booted' from cold at full throttle and there was one idiot in an SL Mercedes doing donuts ! EVERY car that came on/off the boat was ragged off the limiter !!

I did it this way: (always after the oil temp in Maxidot shows 90C+)

0-100 miles, go to 4000rpm on 1,2,3 gear at least on each driving.

100-500 miles, once a drive go 5000rpm in 2,3,4 gear.

500-700 miles once a week to 6000rpm in those gears.(watch the speed limit)

At 700 miles i changed oil, oil filter & air filter.

At 2500 miles i drove to Ben@Shark in Mansfield to remap it (2000 miles away :-) and enjoyed the autobahns on my way home.

I did first service at 6500 miles and since then i have done 7.000 miles (total 13,5K miles) in 8 months mostly motorways, and i have topped only 0.5l oil.

All good and smooth, no oil is being used, and it goes like a train.

Enjoy it :)

I did what was on this page.

Not really following it I just couldn't help but give the VRS some welly when I got it and ended up following his method by default.

It's basically warm the engine up properly and then give it full throttle but not high revs.

I held back on the revs for the first 1000 miles but did floor it regularly.

Engine runs sweet as a nut 42k later and is pretty reasonable on oil ( half to one litre between services 10k approx.)

Just use common sense really. I didn't run mine in as such, just generally took it easy with the occaisional blast up to around 700 miles (1,000km) then drove as I wanted to after that. I drinks no oil at all. I think i've topped up a quarter of a litre in 2 1/2 years and it's only been serviced once. Currently on 14,000 miles.

There is loads of performance available without full revs so I don't think you need worry too much about missing out on the fun !

Couldn't have put it better myself, modern engines don't need running in as such, just let the engine warm up and then give her some welly to bed in the piston rings.
