HID lighting

Featured Replies

I am about to take delivery of a vRS but I have heard bad reports about the standard lights H7 bulbs.

Is this correct?

On all my previous cars BMW, Mazda, Seat I have replaced the bulbs with an HID kit

This gives a vast improvement on the original

These cars did not have self leveling lights and most did not have headlight wash and I never had any problrm regarding legal issues

All the main dealers were quite happy to MOT these cars

Has any owner converted to HID?

Which ones did they use and did the have any canbus problems ( bulb failure warnings)

I just posted in the bulb thread...

It looks like this HID kit will work with canbus. Haven't tried it but would be tempted...

According to an MOT tester I once spoke to... 'The light just has to be mainly white'. I had an HID kit in my Fabia at the time and that passed no problem at all.

That looks a smart kit.

Are they legal and easy to install?

TBH I haven't fitted these, but I have fitted different ones on a previous Fabia, they should be easy, especially with the rubber covers on the back of the headlights now (had to cut a hole in the old back covers!)

All I had to do with the old ones was run a couple of cables through (1 pair out, 1 pair in) and fit the bulb and ballast. Easy peasy.

They probably aren't strictly road legal as they won't be self leveling, and you probably don't have the head light washers, but I drove past loads of police and had it MOT'd several times and no problems! They just don't check / care. And with the projector lamps you won't be glaring at people so much either.

HIDS are now an MOT fail unless the car has washers and auto leveling.

Dissapointed the new Fabia doesnt have them

I like the look of the cheaper kit too.

I don't think you'd ever get stopped on the road, who's going to know they weren't standard?

And if you do fail an MOT for it just pop the bulbs back in for the MOT...

Exactly, go for 4300k and you won't have any issues. At the end of the day, as long as the lights are not causing problems to others, who is going to stop you and check?

Ive got one of the ebay HID kits on mine at 8000K, DEAD easy to fit (there is a bloody good guide on here too)

never been flashed, never been moaned at.

got the rocker switch for the levelling (set to 0.5/1)

got no washers on it but i might get a pathetic dribble nipple so if anything ever happens they actually 'wash'

Highly recommended upgrade

PS- If you do this PLEASE change your W5W sidelights to white LED's (£1 for 2 on ebay) so you don't look like a mis-matched wally

i was going to recommend car mod shop too. i have bought three kits from them, top class. same kit as the more expensive one as you will need the canbus kit for the fabia 2. dead easy to fit. and they are not a fail yet as my brothers car passed mot yday with them in

While accepting that projector lamps generally have better definition than many reflectors, the assertion is incorrect for two reasons.

The first relates to beam pattern; conforming HID headlights have a different beam pattern to non-HID headlights, in that instead of a 15 degree wedge to the left of the beam there is a step shape which doesn't allow the pool of brightness to rise so far on the left.

The second relates to general headlamp design which allows a small proportion of light output above the main pool of brightness, for the express purpose of illuminating reflective roadsigns such as those on overhead gantries. If you fit an HID bulb to a non-HID headlamp unit then the light coming from this part of the headlight will be much brighter than if a normal bulb is fitted.

I'm sure your right, but it is much better than the Fabia Mk1 headlights. I had HID's fitted in there, and once I got the bulb seated correctly (ooops...) I never got flashed in that, or stopped, or questioned at all. The projector lamps probably are different to the HID units (I should have a look, I've got them on my Octavia) but it is still a step up from the non-projectors on the Mk1 :)

I did light up signs rather well with those headlights actually, and police cars handily....
