Turbo failure

Featured Replies

Hello guys.

We have some trouble with the turbo. Suddenly it just don't give extra power. There is no black or white smoke, so i think it might be an electrical problem.

Could it be an error code? Or the MAF sensor? Or something else?

It started last summer in a long steep uphill in very warm climat. I managed to get it going again with removing the batterycables and putting them on again. Then we could drive again. But in the next steep uphill it stopped again.

It have just happened in hard driving until now. Now it doesn't work at all.

I guess someone else have experienced this before?

Sounds like the common problem of the variable vane geometry in the turbo. The vanes and the control ring stick after a long period of short cold drives.

Take a look at the symptoms described in this link and see if they are same as yours. As well as a very good explanation it also gives the solution.

Click on Sticky turbo vanes explained and then on VNT Turbo Rebuilds.

If you find that this is the problem, there is a very good pictorial guide on here by mbames showing how to fix it yourself.

(Incidentally, you can reset the turbo control by just turning the engine off and then on again without removing the battery leads).
