less power at low revs?

Featured Replies

hi folks, i have just traded in my old 2002 Octavia 1.9 TDI (110 BHP) with 196,000 miles on the clock, and bought a similar model The Octavia Hatch 1.9 TDI Elegance which apparently is 105 BHP and has only 22675 miles on the clock.

The old car would smoothly pull away at tickover revs both forward and reverse, and the power came in smoothly from there.

The new model struggles a bit at tickover and needs more revs and a little clutch slip (not much) to pull away, otherwise it feels slightly "lumpy" (especially in reverse0

Is this normal and due to engine or software changes? or is there a fault? the dealers say there isn't a problem, (they may be right of course)

The new engine seems to have less power at low revs, but once it reaches somewhere round 2000, its very good, and on a 150 mile run the computer read 57 mpg.

Advice please?

Oops! I forgot to mention that the newer car is a 2008 model!

If the new car has a CR engine instead of the old PD version then I believe they have a lot less torque at idle. It used to be damned near impossible to stall a diesel but that is not true with a modern CR engine, far from it in fact.

A 2008 plate 1.9 will be a pd engine. You will soon get used to the differences in power delivery between your old TDI and the PD engine.

Thanks for the reply, does anyone know what type of engine the old model had please?

I think your 110 would have had a traditional distributor pump setup.

My inlaws went from an old 110bhp 1.9 to the newer 105bhp 1.9 Octavia, and they had the same complaint. I run a 07 1.9 and although I'm very happy with it I do find it takes a lot of effort getting it going in first but once you have the revs above 1500 it is very keen and willing.

Thanks for the replies folks, very reassuring!
