Self Leveling Lights - or is my SM winking at cars?

Featured Replies

Driving home down the M4 last night (just after I'd passed a black SM near Newport), I noticed that my dipped lights were constantly resetting thir height levels and going through the "startup dance" then setting back to the correct height. Only for it to be going through the same loop a few minutes later.

just wondering if SM has started winking at other cars ;-)

Anyway, I ended up getting off the M4 at Swindon and driving with the "dancing lights" and fog lights on to get home.

Phoned up the dealer on the way and they've not had this one before on a SM, so going to have a look next week for me.

Has anybody else had this one before?

Generally, if there is a problem with the self levelling system it will default to a low 'emergency' setting to ensure they don't start guiding in air traffic from Heathrow.

Could be the actual control unit got haywire if it keeps running it's self check procedure.

Short of going to the dealers, have you tried disconnecting the negative battery lead for 10 minutes? The optimist in me says it might be a one off gremlin. I would hope there are some nice juicy DTCs for the dealer to find. Can you get access to VCDS beforehand just to see for yourself?

Yes, occasionally the car needs resetting. Even turning off the ignition and restsarting car solve lots of problems.

Last week I had one journey where Elsie was gurgling strange noises all across London, the gear change was jerky. Most unpleasant. Also the lights did not turn themselves on when I unlocked the car-I had left them in auto with the liights set up to come on/stay on. Elsie was fine after a short stop.

Sort of control-alt-delete! LOL

Mine did this twice on one journey. Was very disconcerting. But a stop and a redraft and it has never returned.
