TDI flatspot - any known ECU Probs??

Featured Replies

My 110 TDI Octy seems to have a flatspot just about 1900-2000 rpm, just before max torque.

I drove a 90 TDI golf for 5 years (134k miles) without a problem, but the Octy only has 20k miles on it.

Its most noticeable in 2nd gear. When accelerating (at a normal rate) the car seems to die, and then take off when the turbo kicks in. It feels like it is being temporarily starved of fuel.

I had it in for its 20k service on friday and informed the service manager of the problem. When i picked up the car on friday night, he said he had to change the fuel filter, and that someone had been using very dirty diesel (not me, sainsburys only). When i asked him about the flat spot, he said he thought it was the fuel filter, which was also causeing problems when starting. However, the problem is still there exactly the same.

Do any Techs or TDI owners out there know of similar problems????

Cheers

JD

Hi JD,

I used to have a very similar effect in the golf at about 3000rpm to 3300rpm it would just hit a wall and then take off again.

Eventually discovered it was a faulty MAF meter. Took it to the dealer and said that I suspected a faulty MAF - they took it in and within 45 minute had replaced it all under warranty - now goes like stink.

Might be worth getting them to have a look at that ... good luck

Seb, i thought that a MAF failure would cause power lose throughout the rev range. Was your problem instantaneous??

Mine feels like its only for a split second, and as i say, most noticeable in 2nd. Was yours happening in every gear?? and at the same revs??

Cheers

Faulty MAF sensors do cause flat spots in the rev range, as well as general poor power.

Poor running can also be caused by some tuning boxes

Hi JD,

Well after i had the MAF replaced power in the rest of the band remain unchanged but the 3000 - 3300 range improve significantly and the car pulled right through without the slightest hesitation (and still does)

Was my problem instantaneous... do you mean like one day I woke up and there it was? - Well no not really it progressively got worse over time to point where it was irritating (because in the TDI really drive over 3000rpm but when you do you expect something to happen).

I must admit it was more noticeable in certain gears and yeah occurred at the same point in the rev band every time.

From what I understand with fault / failing MAF sensors is that they don't all fail in the same way and the symptom / characteristics of a failinf MAF can be varied. It is something they can test on a workbench so maybe worth getting it checked out and know / eliminating that as a problem. Best of luck - let us know what it is one you've got it sussed.
