Yeti and Tiguan

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a 320 owner looking to move a more family orientated Car with a bit of off road capability as my job takes me onto farms. After reading up the Yeti came as an obvious choice. However after visiting my Skoda dealer in Cardiff I couldn't get to test drive or even see it, they don't have any! I was told if ordering as of know you are looking at a 6 month lead time! The dealer told if I wanted to get an idea of the car and the interior to test drive the Tiguan which I have done. First up I'm shocked at the price of the VW, yeah it's well bolted together but for the life of me I can't see where the 25k plus is (more expensive than my 320). I don't know if anyone else has compared the two cars, but it would be nice if someone could tell if they are the same under the skin, floor pan, engines, switchgear etc. What is the qulaity of the skoda interior like compared to the VW? I like the looks of the Skoda better, far more character although my son likes the VW better. Any info regading the Yeti gretafully received.

Hi Pugger

Welcome to the site. I was of the same mind as you, the Tiguan is expensive. This site has a number of Yeti owners around S. Wales, maby you can meet up and have a look at one.

From what you say, a 4x4 would be ideal. I have run mine for 15 months now and I still think it is brilliant. Its had its first service which was carried out at 15000 miles without any problems and I have had a year of trouble free motoring. I was one of the early owners and delivery thme then was one to two months so I have seen two winters with it. Some owners have bought a set of winter tyres which is a wise option but we went through the last major "ice ages" with the Goodyear tyres supplied and the "off-road" button engaged and came out without any incident.

If you can wait it is worth it. (we all say this on this forum!!!)

The Tiguan is bigger on the outside and smaller inside. Driver's position probably more comfortable, but back seat not. The mechanical gear is pure VAG in both cases. the Tig is likely more oriented towards the Autobahn than the Yeti, but having said that, I have done several high speed runs up and down Europe and can tell you the Yeti is very well behaved both on the bahn at speed and in shoddy slimy road conditions.

Style is a personal question. So is badge snobbery.

IMHO, the Yeti is superior to the Tig.

I would suggest you check out other dealers with Yeti's in stock - even a used one.

The Yeti is a brilliant compromise of convenience, handling and power, well put together and a blast to drive. Mine has almost 30,000 miles on it and is more fun to drive now than when I got it.

I would say the interior is more similar to the Golf or Octavia than the Tiguan. Not sure about ride etc. The Tiguan is slightly heavier and if you opting for a diesel, they ride better than the Petrol due to the heavier engine.

Have driven both, which as the dealer suggests are very similar from my point of view. Slightly higher seating position in the VW but the interior again in my view is outdated compared to the Yeti.

The Yeti is predominately Golf based however the rear suspension on the 4x4 is basically Tiguan, see this post which is still work in progress Yeti DNA

Regards,

TP

The current Tiguan is about to be facelifted - it is to be formally launched at Geneva on 1 March, but, thanks to internet leaks, images are everywhere. I understand that VW have stopped taking orders for the outgoing model - the new ones are approx 6 months delivery. The cabin is largely from a Golf Plus, which I have, but having been in a mate's Tiguan, the quality is a big step up. Having recently test driven a Yeti, I would say the interior is on a par with my Golf Plus, the Tiguan noticeably better. As for a dealer sending you off to a rival's for a test drive - just how little work do they expect to do to get a sale.

Thanks for all the replies. Thanks for the link to the yetiDNA thread, very interesting. As for sending me to VW the sales guy was obviosuly not particulary happy with the pecking order cars seem to be delivered! I did give me an idea to the size and make up of the car, but theres no way in hell would I pay the asking price for the Tiguan, it's overpriced by at least 4k to me. I have made phoned Skoda Newport and I'm waiting on a call to confirm if they have any in the show room. The stock levels of used online are completely out of date.

I second this. My Yeti history is virtually identical, except I live in Scotland!

Considered a Tiguan also but when I specced one up to the same level and options as the Yeti (I have now), it came in over £30K. Ridiculously expensive and nowhere near the number of options and accessories available.

It's a no brainer in my opinion. Same old story from another very happy Yeti owner... I've done over 10K miles now and I've not had a single problem with it. It's a joy to drive and own. I dread to think how long I would have to wait for the same spec now (it's a 170 diesel with sunroof!) but the wait would definitely be worth it.

Pugger,

I've now had mine since last July and it has been used off-road extensively, with no problems. I would offer you a look around it but don't know when I'll be in Cardiff next. I do know there is a Yeti around Llandaff area, as he sometimes posts on here.

I wasn't impressed with the Cardiff dealer when I dropped in there around Christmas, and have heard poor reports on the one at Taffs Well. The dealer in Swansea has very good reports made about them, so it might be worth ringing them.

Thanks for the info, the Cardiff dealship didn't half seem to be poorly stocked, is there a problem with VW servicing Skoda? Are they supllying Audi and VW first and leaving Skoda out to dry. The sales guy was nice enough, but what could he do, they had no Yeti's to show me, although they may have one coming in the week! He was as frustrated as some of his customers no doubts. By the way I just managed to get a quote for 22K for the Elegance maodel 170, really tempted at that price, but I want to drive and see the bloody thing first! I also noticed that the emisions are lower on the 170 compared to the 140 diesel, whats all that about. It's been a great day so far. Had BMW all over me (offered me an X3 for 31K!) then VW then the guys from Skoda. Great fun! Oh and cheers Johan more great info. Great site this by the way.

The 170 has lower fuel consumption than the 140. That's why the CO2 is also lower.

Now, does it make sense?? Same engine block and displacement, same gearbox and final drive ratios - so what gives? The fuel economy should be that same, unless thee is a quirk in the testing procedure, favoring the higher torque of the 170.

Startin's at Powick (just outside Worcester, 5 minutes to M5), which is not too far from Cardiff, have an Elegance demonstrator - diesel but i don't know what size. I took it out a couple of weeks ago - no pressure from them - just gave me the keys for an hour.

I was unable to demo a Yeti at my local dealer, but since I was going to be in Souths Wales area he arranged for me to drive the demo at White Dove in Cardiff. I found them very helpful given that they knew I would not be buying from them, they have obviously sold on their demostrator since then, well it was October.

Have you tried Griffin Mill at Upperboat just south of Pontypridd they may have a demo.

I also looked at the Tiguan, but felt that they were over priced and the interior looked dated.

After a month's ownership of my Yeti I very happy with it, excellent performance, quiet and a very refined place to be.

Have had Tiguan for 3 years; too big, too heavy and godawful ride in Sport spec. Lovely solid feeling car and good cabin ambience. But drove a Yeti- lighter, infinitely better ride, smaller and I ordered a 140 Elegancein November. God knows when it will turn up.

Right, I have a test Drived booked at last, Newport have a Elegance 140 2 wheel drive and on the 26th of Feb I get to see it and drive it. Funny thing is though although they are very happy for me to take it out on my own they told me the dealers excess is £2500! Is this standard? Further I have got two great quotes from Drive the Deal and Corts for the 170 Elelgance for around £21500, when I put this to the Cardiff dealer he got really abrupt with me, in fact he told me he's sorry for wasting my my time by quoting, which he still did and do you know he quoted me 23900 for the 140 Elegance. Book price 22650. I tried to point this out to him but I couldn't get a word in edge ways. Will talk to the Newport dealer and see what he can do. At least I will get to see it. Oh and the cardiff dealer said they could get the car in about 4 months know.

The quote of £23900 for the 140 is list price with the DSG.

Thought all the 140's are 4x4? Only the 110 is 2WD.

The excess with my Volvo dealer is £500. This is for test drives and courtesey cars

Yes quite normal for Motor Trade policies to have a high excess - some BMW dealers have a £5,000 excess, after all car dealers are the ones who could repair their own accident damage at cost price (parts too)

Hi - I live in Cardiff north, I've got a S model 110bhp 4x4 - with a spare wheel fitted. If you wanted to see the car I wouldn't mind meeting somewhere locally. I managed to test drive a deisel in Cardiff White Dove - but to be honest I wasn't that impressed with them. I also test drove the 1.2 in Griffin Mill - which I found ok - was given the keys and off I went - 2hrs later and yes I do mean 2hrs after I'd check out the roads i drive on daily, checked it would fit on my drive and made sure I could get stuff in the boot. I've only had my car a couple of weeks. I waited four months for mine. I was still unsure exactly want I would get as all the demonstrators seem to be at least an SE spec - and none of them had a spare wheel - so although there are photos on here it not same as seeing it in the flesh.

Hi Chatter Box, thanks for the offer. I'm in the Heath area so you must be near me. If you have a spare 5 minutes I wouldn't mind poping over to see the car. 4 months seem like a short wait with the times i've been quoted.

Could meet up this we if ok Waitrose car park is quite near and a fairly small car park to look out in if that was convenient for you. Ordered the car late September and was given build week 3 to begin with, then mid December was told the car was built and waiting shipment. Turned up mid Jan.
