New Tyres Needed

Featured Replies

At nearly 18000 miles I think I have gotten away with it long enough, and will be replacing the original Dunlops this week. I've noticed in the last month as the tyres have become progressively shinier and smoother, that my MPG has taken a turn for the worse. Nothing else has changed, either.

As you do, I did a bit of digging on Google to look at my potential costs, and the results were interesting. The chap at my local National had to look them up and made surprising comment (to me) that the tyres as specified were specific for Skoda, as his reference had SK in the title.

In the end I am having them done through the dealer I got the car from, Sinclair Skoda, despite an 80 mile round trip. Their price was very competitive, and beat a number of national companies. There were "deals" to be found, usually necessitating that I order and pay online, and accept delivery at home!.. Hassle, I thought, for a few quid.

Anyway, since I want the dealer to look at a couple of things, and since their price of £600 inc VAT, fitted, balanced, tracked, valved, environmentalled, and the oldies disposed of, I have arranged for Sinclair to impress me again.

So, what's yer gonna get??

Blimey, the most I have ever paid for a tyre was £80 and I never went for the dodgy ones. Why are Yeti tyres so expensive? Have you reduced the speed rating at all as at the moment I think it enables you to go up to 150mph or something daft which will never happen?

The premium tyres seems to start around £131 per corner from mytyres, and by the time you have messed around waiting for delivery of the last tyre, as one poster recently stated, having to wait in for them, plus then take them to somewhere to fit, you won't see much change for £15+ for a tyre shop to fit only tyres not supplied, and it looks like George's price is in the right order.

ferzackly the same.

I enjoyed the Dunlops, so why change. I am not a "believer" in the winter tyre stuff - for me, round 'ere.

have a look at blackcircles

used them before and saved quite a bit. they deliver to a tyre fitters near you.

you choose where and when you want them fitted then just turn up.

or try event tyres

We needed a Dunlop SP Sport 01 urgently and found them hard to source..

Paid £195 Kwikfit as the had a 'cancelled order' but got home and found 'online'

Kwikfit price (same day) at £135 fitted which annoyed me.

Looked on line and found the lowest around £130....no better deals available at the

time at Mytyre/Blackcircles when you add in the £10-15 fitting charge.

There was a 2/3 day availability excluding delivery time so they are obviously not

a very common tyre.

I was expecting tyres to be in the £100-125 range for a mainstream brand, so significantly

dearer than expected.

Be careful as there are two versions available ...Run Flat and Non Run flat ...supprisingly

with little difference in price.

The Yeti's are Non Run Flat...Although Skoda UK were not sure when I checked with them

and referred me to the dealer.

Run Flat's have a very rigid side wall so very easy to distinguish....had not come across them before.

Just looked through the Blackcircles site and they now list the Kumho KL17 4x4 tyres, which I had on the Freelander, and found to be excellent, giving very good road behaviour and more than adequate off-road capability. Plus I get 10% discount from them with my CSMA membership! However in the past I have quoted their price to the fitter they use in Llani and he has been able to undercut them. I shall need some before the summer, so had better start saving now!

Did a little 'online' research to find potential suppliers of Dunlop SP Sport 01

so if have an unrepairable punture know where to look.

Came up with KwikFit, ATStyremaster??..., HiQ as well as the previously mentioned.

I know they are not small independants but at least reasonably accessable nationwide.

Not always at home area when a flat occurs.

I will definately check 'online' first and not get caught again with the cheaper

'online' than 'drive in' scenario.

You can come out of hiding now. I think I remember that the Dunlops did better than all the other OEM tyres in winter and wet, so with prudence, nothing wrong with that.

My sumer tyres absolutely stunk on simulated winter straightline brakeíng on the skid pad, so I believe my choice for me was the right one. Actually the decision was made long before the test on the skidpad, but that is another story.

We have now had two winters with abnormally amounts of snow, so although I cannot take much credit, my set-up has worked out well as reported in another recent thread.

I'm looking into getting my 'summer' tyres in the next 4-6 weeks or so and have shortlisted Falken FK452 @ £460, Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas @ £560 or Pirelli P Zero Rosso @ £660 (prices are fitted inc VAT approx). I'm not a Dunlop fan.

I'll be getting 225/45 18s that are slightly more expensive than the regular 225/50 17s.

Trying to weigh up the performance/mileage/cost equation and am not sure which direction to go. I'll be doing around 10,000 miles during the 7-8 month 'Summer' season.

Decisions?

PS> I think the OP's dealer's price of £600 all in for Dunlops is pretty fair.
