Whistling noise 1.4MPI

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 1.4MPI Skoda Fabia 1. Recently the engine (or something else...) has started making a high pitched whistling noise. This starts shortly after starting the car and only stops when I press my foot on the accelerator while moving along. Interestingly though when pushing the accelerator while stationery the noise remains, though the pitch increases with the revs!

Its the same throughout all of the gears and the brakes have recently been replaced. So i'm wondering if anyone has any clues as to what might be the problem here?

Thanks,

Matt

Timing belt, also common on the Polo. I had two belts fitted in warranty for the same thing. Also check vacuum hoses for leaks.

first thing that comes to mind are the two belt tensioner, they have a tendency do do just that

seccond thing that comes to mind is the clutch assembly

i would also check the oil in the transmission, a mechanic put axel grease (w180) on my and i did a gargly noise untli it got warmed, maybe your´s has water or low oil level.

turn on you car and open the boot, with a pieces of hose you can pin point where the sound is coming from just put one end in your ear and point the other at all the moving parts of the engine.

hope this helps dude, good luck

Bear in mind the 1.4MPi uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Although this sounds like a more robust alternative to belts (and, in terms of outright failures, it probably is), it does have a habit of wearing or losing tension over time. On my old MPi, this resulted in a clattery rattling sound.

I do remember the whole timing chain kit, including tensioners etc, was dirt cheap from Skoda as it wasn't VW parts!

Air filter, intake manifold gasket? (Just random guesses).

Thanks for the feedback folks, I think that i'll try the old hose trick to see if i can pinpoint the problem!
