M.O.T Failure And Advisory Items

Featured Replies

The 6 yr old car failed on Brake servo vacuum pump-£84 to fix and what is a servo vacuum pump?

Advisory items which I don't know what they are and how much do they cost to fix

Front brake discs lipped?

Nearside and offside rear bumpstops perished?

Tailgate gas struts leaking?

Plus both front tyres are wearing, these are 2 years old in November, so might change the tyres round.

Brakes are just worn disks I'd imagine. Was quoted 1hour to change by VW + £50 parts. You might want/need new pads too though, although these should cost no extra to fit. (When cold, if you run your fingers up the disk, you'll feel a lip around the circumference where it's worn down.)

Gas struts - get one off of a scrapped/ written off car? £10? If it's only 1 that's leaking, could you remove it to get it through the test?

Bumpstops - no idea.

Diesel engines by their nature are unable to create sufficient vacuum through the inlet manifold (due to not having a throttle body)in order to allow the brake servo to operate correctly. They therefore have a separate vacuum pump to provide the vacuum levels required.

Front brake discs lipped?

Your brake pads do not contact the very edge of the brake disc so as they are applied and wear, a lip is formed around the outer circumference, Manufacturers specify a minimum thickness of the brake disc so they are suggesting that the discs are getting close to being replaced. (Personally its not worth skimping on brakes or tyres)

Nearside and offside rear bumpstops perished?

They stop the dampers from damaging themselves (too much) when bottoming out, yours are worn.

Tailgate gas struts leaking?

Your boot lid could smack you on the head! :-)

Wheel alignment. and rotation front to rear could help extend the life of the tyres potentially.

Yeah might get the brake disc done in a few weeks time. Would you suggest to do all the four corners at the same time or just replace the disc which is damaged?.

The discs HAVE to be replaced as axle pairs, along with new pads so that they can bed in as an entity.

It is always best to replace discs in pairs on the same axle, ie, replace front ones or rear ones. If you replace them individually the car may pull to one side when braking as the new one will give better braking.

When replacing discs it is always advisable to put new pads on at the same time.

While I agree with you - and replace on a per axle basis - would ABS stop the pulling of imbalanced brakes? Or am I being stopid?

How much to replace all disc and pads on all corners?

Rear bumpstops are not an MOT failure item, hence they can only advise that they need replacing. They are there to protect the rear dampers, but unless you are running low I wouldn't worry too much.

Errr how do I put it?...........yes you are i'm afraid :-)

Sorry couldn't help myself...been a long day! :giggle:

unfortunately it is that old saying of how long is a piece of string! It will vary on the quality of the parts fitted and the labour cost of the fitting centre. Maybe at a guess, between £250 and £500ish......best to get a couple of quotes.

I got a few quotes from Skoda,VW and a mechanic from a now closed independent Skoda garage who rents a bay at a M.O.T garage.

Skoda

The prices are as follows:

OSF Seatbelt would need replacing: £187.46

Front Tyres: Yes they can be changed from front to back: £38.37

Front Brake discs and pads: £204.20

Rear Brake Discs and pads: £185

Rear Bumpstops: £89

Tailgate Gas Struts: £73.13

VW

Replacement of rear bump stops x 2: £151.7

Replacement of front brake discs and pads: £196.75

Replacement of rear brake discs and pads: £167.89

Mechanic

£350-400 for all the lot.

He said why are Skoda quoting me £39 to swap wheels round, they need to come of anyway when the discs go on?

He is charging me about £15 less for the discs and pads then VW. He also said he will try and fix the seat belt for free.
