Faulty driveshaft gaiters Octavia 2 TDI DSG 2005

Featured Replies

My Octavia 2(2005) TDI DSG has had 3 faulty driveshaft gaiters on MOT tests in 2008(at 17,000 miles) 2010 and 2011. Is this substandard manufacturing quality? I have never had this problem before. One car of a different make did 115,000 miles another 75,000 miles. Others had had high mileages without one failure. My car's mileage is 32,000. My wife's Seat Leon TDI(2002) at 50,000 has had no problem.Has anyone any ideas about this please?

Hi and welcome aboard.

welcome.

I have had Octavias since 2005 and covered around 200,000 miles and I've never had any problems with drive shaft gaiters.

Is it the same drive shaft that is having the gaiter problem? If so is there something else that is causing the gaiter to fail.

Are you sure that the gaitors had failed/ needed replacing. This is quiet a common MOT issue along with brakes at some MOT places (especially fast fit type places), where they say they need replacing when in reality there is nothing wrong. They get away with it because you cannot see these parts to know that there is really nothing wrong, and they usually then get the replacement work which is more money from you.

in 100K miles in my old 2005 PD140 elegance estate I had only one replaced in the 4 years I owned the car.

Thank you for your response. I must admit that I have always had my suspicions. I asked for the faulty part, which was not returned. I was told by a technician that it was something involving a clip. ( this was the technician who replaced the gaiter in 2008 at 17,000 miles. He said that it had been incorrectly fitted at the factory)Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks for your response. In 2008 at 17,000 miles it was nearside outer, in 2010 it was offside outer, in 2011 it was nearside outer again. This is the same Main Dealer. I should have insisted on having the old part.I am making an issue about this gaiter problem with the manufacturer. Thank you for your information.

i had to have one of mine replaced at about 90000 and it was well n truly shot when it got changed
