Tyre instant repair (Holts Tyreweld)

Featured Replies

I have a slow puncture in one of my (fantastic winter) tyres. Should I wait and get it professionally repaired (difficult on a Sunday) or drive on the spare tyre (80kmh limit despite being exact same size as other tyres, different load rating though 91 vs 94) or use my joker (i.e. whack it full of 'Tyreweld')? Got a long drive tomorrow before dawn!

I think I read somewhere that once you use 'Tyreweld' the tyre cannot be properly repaired afterwards. That doesn't sound entirely implausible but there is a whiff of BS about it.

Is there a quick fit or any other tyre centres open in your area if so go and get it repaired dont use that tyre weld you will have to scrap the tyre

You can repair the tyers, the problem is most tyre fitters advise against because its hard work cleaning it all out !!

Thanks guys. There is a Kwikfit centre 30 minutes away and I prefer the peace of mind of getting it done right. Nice to know for the future, can appreciate it is messy from mending bicycle tyres.

£21 repair from Kwik-fit in Oxford, very good service even though they were busy. It was a screw buried in the tread, funny thing was it looked familiar from a summer project, think I might need to do a walk down for foreign objects on my drive !

Haven't had a puncture fixed for a long time but they always did 'em for free if you told them "yes I got the tyre from here". In fact first time they were most insistent that I must have bought the tyre from them - who was I to argue!

Advice on the Skoda tyre repair gunk is only to use it if all else fails. Use the compressor and if it can't get up to pressure within 4 minutes(?) then try the gunk. Once the gunk is used the tyre is a write off but if the compressor can't get the pressure up then it probably would be even without the gunk.

BTW those of you who have the spare wheel should consider getting one of these compressors - they are fantastic! Small, portable, has a really accurate in-built pressure gauge and tops up the tyres in no time

The main reason they limit use to 4 minits ,is that they burn out, have seen dozens of Mercedes, VW ,Vauxhall units that have done this,

And be were of the compressure's that you have to screw the gunk canister on to the unit ,it ruins the comp !!

No you don't! The gunk bottle (and it is a plastic bottle) has a connector to attach to the tyre valve. Instructions are to remove the valve, attach the bottle and hand squeeze the gunk into the tyre; then refit the valve and blow up with the compressor. A spare valve is supplied - I guess in case you lose the original.

I was giving genral advice ,there some units that the slime is pumped through the conmpresure and the bottle screws directley

on to the compresure case !!

I couldn't say I had got the tyre from them because they don't sell the brand I have, could have tried I suppose.

Fair enough. Looks like Skoda have come up with a different method to save the compressor :D

I read through the instructions a month or so ago on the grounds that it was better to have an idea of the procedure before I found myself stuck at the side of the road in horizontal rain trying to work out what to do.

TBH the tyre weld is a very useful "feck, stuck on an a/bahn in the middle of nowhere at night" puncture repair to get to somewhere that will do it properly.

I'd never use it unless it was the only option or if it was dangerous to change the tyre for the spare and you couldn't pump it up normally due to the rate of air loss.

Yes that is why I got it too. Just imagine being suited and booted and stuck somewhere crappy.

My stepfather once tried to use one of these small 12V compressors to re-inflate a large tractor tyre. Deciding it was going to take a while he left it running, came back an hour or so later to find the compressor now a lump of partially molten plastic on the ground.....In fairness it had almost completely re-inflated the tractor tyre before expiring though!
