Felicia 1.6 temp gauge only reaches 75 C

Featured Replies

Hello All

I have read all treads about temp-problem, but I cant figure witch part has a failure.

It takes the car about 8 miles to hit the 75 C after that the temp are constant.

If the car is standing still, the radiator fan kicks in at about 80 C, maybe lower.

Hope that there are someone who can help me?

Where are you taking the readings from? The thermostat is supposed to open between 85 and 89 degrees (my new one has 87 stamped in the bottom), be fully open at 103, so I suspect that the fan should kick in around the 110/115 mark. Given that the fan switch and the temp sensor are separate, I would be given to think that the temp sensor is probably the culprit here.

I would put a genuine thermostat in and also replace the temp sender, Ive had similar problems, and replaced both, being that the coolant was getting drained out

Pattern part thermostats are a waste of time, and not much cheaper

Agreed - that sounds like the gauge is misreading, so it's either the sensor, the gauge, or a bad connection somewhere between them. If you have a meter, check that the resistances across pins 1-3 and 2-4 of the sensor are both in the region of 4k Ohms when cold and 300 Ohms when warmed up.

The actual temperature fan switch should come on at is 92-97oC (or 95oC and 103oC for the 2-stage A/C fan), and it should switch off again at 88oC. Bear in mind those temperatures are at the radiator so the gauge reading isn't directly comparable. Either way it sounds like yours is working correctly relative to the thermostat.

Alex: at that price I'd bet a leg that's a pattern housing/stat from Hans Pries.

I actually measured the resistance today, after a short run home, there was a differences of 600-700 between 1-3 and 2-4? but also the lowest was 700, I think it was pin 1-3. I'll look tomorrow

and thanks for the fast answers.

I have just tested the sensor at when it is "warm" pin 2-4 is 600 ohm and pin 1-3 is 1000 ohms. The fan started just after I checked it.

Shouldn't these two values be the same?

I also talk with the previous owner, and he said the whole plastic housing had been changed 1½-2 years ago.
