Is this a viable option?

Featured Replies

I'm still keen to take the vRS to stage 2 but money is a bit of an issue, currently running stage 1 with a EVOMS intake, I have spoken to my tuner and they will take the software to stage 2 for £100 so thanks cool, the big expense for me is the DP.

I was originally planning to fit a Pipewerx high flow DP with 200 cell sport cat, at £465 it was quite good compared to other systems, but since the VAT increase and a price hike it is now £550! The alternative was a Blue flame de-cat which comes in at a very reasonable £230 delivered, the obvious problem with fitting this is when it comes to MOT time, fortunately I have a very friendly mechanic who will deal with this. If I'm honest I would sooner be legal, so whilst browsing the net the idea struck me, buy the blue flame and then source a 3" universal sport cat and combine the two. Alternatively I have also found a 2.5" 200 cell sport cat, and I wondered if it was an option to modify the OE down pipe, the idea would be to knock out the pre-cat directly after the turbo then replace the existing cat with the Sport version, then have the appropriate remap done. Ideally I would have flanges fitted to the dp and cats so they could be interchangeable if I want to standardise the motor when I come to sell it.

Any views or ideas on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Lee.

Mad you put this thread up fella as been having similar thoughts myself as i currently have a 200 cell cat on my leon and was wondering if i was to buy the pipeworx downpipe and decat and then weld the cat in (if so would bolt the standard cat back in when i sell the car). Aint had much chance to have a look at the exhaust on mine even though ive spent loads of time underneath it lol, but does the standard cat have flanges on it to be able to remove and replace when it comes to mot time?

Great minds?????

The standard down pipe is one piece with the cat integral, as are most (if not all) aftermarket types for the vRS anyway! I've spoken to my mechanic and his intention is to remove my DP cut out the cat then weld flanges on it and the pipe so it can be refitted by bolting it in, he would then weld identical flanges to the sport cat to make them interchangeable, finally he will knock out the pre-cat filter and hey presto a hi-flow downpipe with sport cat for around 200 sheets!!!

If it works..............

This is the sort of thing I'm looking at, bargain!

what about an alternative

you have a very good intake.

Remove the precat and you will get a good little improvement there and reduced EGTs so can run slightly higher boost etc without over heating things.

I say get yourself a set of autotech fuel pump internals and get them to up the rail pressure. Loads more torque and the same output as you would get at stage 2 with an exhaust easily. group buy here

for instance this is a REVO stage 2 on JKMs rollers with the full TBE and intake, forge twintercooler, neuspeed discharge pipework and REVO DSG remap

this is a REVO stage 1 on JKMs rollers with intake and fuel pump and a miltek cat back (cat back gives feck Hp gains though). Its also withthe precat still in place

The stage 2 holds power for that bit longer due to the free flowing exhaust but for the extra cost hes put into the car over what would just be a fuel pump on yours is quite high. Also with your car having a pre-cat removed you would probably make a bit more than this stage 1 as well as its a big restriction

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry lads been away snowboarding last week and aint be able to check the site. Few questions

1. I have the TSI lump and heard the fueling is much improved with this engine so will i need to upgrade the pump.

2. Are you saying that we should remove the pre cat but leave the second cat?

Dainott, with a TSI engine you will not need to upgrade the fuel system. Stage 2 on a TSI is equivalent to Stage 2+ on a TFSI.
