Lots of oil leaking from holes in EGR?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've had a strong smell of burning oil in my car for a while.

After looking closely I've noticed that oil is coming out of the two holes on either side of the EGR valve. This is running onto

the exhaust manifold and causing the smell in the cockpit.

Is it likely to be a faulty EGR valve, or is it more likely to be a leaky seal in the turbo?

Cheers,

Mark.

Mine always used to do this. Well it used to leak some oil, so three times so far I have taken off the EGR/antishudder assembly and cleaned it up. At one point I guess I must have broken the clip which holds the valve which controls the anti-shudder butterfly valve, and that slightly melted on something, and used to give the smell of melting plastic (rather than oil).

Having applied the pikey elephant mod, I can tell the difference between oil and plastic :-) I need to find another length of pipework, as I am not sure that driving along with the windows open during the summer is going to be that pleasant!

I suspect that if you had a faulty oil seal in your turbo you would know about it, as you would spend your life pouring oil back into engine.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. :-)

Your right about the oil. I have to put in about a litre every fortnight so I'm guessing it is a leaky seal on the turbo. :-(

It's a real pain as the turbo went on it 18 months ago. I had a heck of a job tracking a recon down because my engine is the AXR version which seems to be a bit of an oddball.

I suppose I should have paid the full price for a new one rather than trying to save a few hundred quid as it looks like it's all going to have to come off again and they're not easy to gain access to.

Cheers,

Mark

Is AXR the 100bhp PD 1.9?

How many miles are you doing each fortnight? Oil consumption on these engines can be quite high.... Also depends on if you drive it like you stole it everywhere....
