Tuning Superb 1.8 TSI, looking for more torque!

Featured Replies

Hi, has anyone tuned their 1.8 TSI?

I am looking to get some more torque, have BSR PPC v3 solution and it seems interesting. Anything else that I should have a look? Something with good reputation, easy to revert back to factory settings and can be done DIY.

... And why not in the performance section...

I would like to hear from people who have tuned their Superb 1.8 TSI's, what where the gains and how it changed the feel of the car. For myself I am after more torque for overtaking and motorway driving.

You have to be careful with more torque as the 7speed box can not take much more hence the CR170 & V6 have a 6speed box.

I had my PD140 chipped to about 180BHP and was well worth it as was "a bit slow of the mark". but feel the 18TSi is OK as it is.

My car is fitted with manual box and that should be able to handle extra torque fine. Getting of the line i am happy with, getting more midrange torque for overtaking and accelerating to join faster moving trafic is what i am after.

be carrefull, you can't had more torque if you have a DSG7, it can only take 250Nm !!!

Just ordered the BSR PPC 3 unit, can't wait to get it.

330NM should be good and I am sure the manual box can cope with it.

Just ran the remap. Holy c*** what a difference! This thing flies!

Just changed the airfilter to a sports airfilter (Tüv approved), nice change in sound and revs more eagerly.

Just had a sprint in a empty highway. 6th gear, 200+ kph, totally stable and was still pulling/accelerating nicely! If only we had higher speed limits. Need to visit a mate in Germany on summer vacation :)

Hi, I have a 1.8TSi estate. I have had my cars tuned previously and this is no exception!

Step1: Eibach springs were a must as the standard springs were too soft and did not control the car's wallow at speed on undulating roads. After they were fitted there is no 'crash' and bash' that you would think from uprated springs. In fact the car is just as smooth a low speeds as it was before. Where you really notice the difference is on A & B roads. The car is totally composed and can be pushed hard with confidence.

Step 2: The second upgrade was to have the ECU engine settings remapped. The factory settings are set as a 'catch all' to suit average environment conditons. V12 Chip Tuning (Manchester) came to my house and wrote a personalised map to suit my driving style. The turbo now comes in at 1200 revs rather than 1400-1500, the engine puts out 200hp and 320Nm torque.

It is a totally different car. It certainly doesn't feel like a large family estate when you drive it now. The engine remap is not your boy racer style squeeze-every-last-ounce-of-power out of your engine but rather a conservative long-term modification that will provide as much longevity of the engine as the factory settings. (I have driven cars for 15+ years with ECU remaps with no problems at all).

The remap is not detectable by the dealerships (as was tested recently when my car went in for a routine service). I now get more than 35mpg around town and average more than 43mpg on longer journeys. If driven carefully the average goes up to around 46mpg. Incredibly the car returned 51mpg recently on the way to work driving at 40-50 for 40 minutes from a cold start! Naturally if you are heavy footed with the throttle then you will use more fuel - but it's great fun!

Costs? Eibach (German) sportsline springs fitted were £375 inc VAT. ECU remap was £300. I've attached a photo to show the wheel arch clearances after the Eibach springs were fitted.

I can definitely recommend these two upgrades. They have turned a great car in to a fantastic car - perhaps a wolf in sheep's clothing!

Interesting! What was your fuel consumption on similar journeys prior to the remap?

All remaps are detectable, just wanted to clarify that for anyone reading the topic. Any company that tells you otherwise is telling porkies I'm afraid.

Fuel consumption:

Pre-remap: Town driving was 28 mpg, overall was just under 38 mpg. At a push with careful driving I managed 44 mpg - but it was awful boring!

Fortunately dealerships don't have the right diagnostic tools to detect the fuel, ignition etc matrix. Also their engineers are not trained in remapping. Yes, with the right equipment and more importantly, the right knowledge, of course all ECU maps can be detected. With all the remapped cars I have driven over the years (VW, Mazda, Audi and now Skoda) all the various dealerships have had no idea what's been done to the cars.

Whether they look or care are another matter, but dealerships can tell with the diagnostic tools they have whether your car is remapped, quite easily. I think it's important to make that clear and do to all of our customers when asked.

Hi, you wouldn't happen to have the part numbers on the Eibach springs??
