Flower Project

Featured Replies

Thought i'd have a go at another project this month following on from the Glasses and PC monitor thing from earlier.

This time to capture a flower in natural light against a black background using an empty wine bottle box to set the flower in.

I'm very happy with the results... Especially as it was the first attempt at this method.

Hi, we chatted on AV Forums!

Really like these, especially the first one. Can you give me some more info on how these were shot? ISO, aperture, exposure, lighting etc? I like them a lot.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

The four images are all differently processed versions of the same single shot. One in colour, One in B&W, One with the colour levels towards a purple hue and then one with the colour levels towards the red hue. I think my own personal favourite is the B&W version.

The shot itself was taken from directly above using my D90 with Nikkor 50mm 1.8D prime lens with an exposure of 0.6 seconds, f/8.0 and ISO640 with no flash and just natural light from a window. As i mentioned above i got an old box (Mine was used to carry 6 bottles of wine before they were put out on the shelf). I cut the front off and then also cut four slits in the side so as to allow light through in varying degrees as / when required. (Although in this shot i didn't use them). I then sprayed the interior of the box matt black.

For this shot i placed the box with the open front facing upwards and pierced a small hole in the back so as to push the stem of the flower through so it was held upright. I placed the box about a foot off the floor (on top of a bin) and around 3 feet from the window and placed the camera & tripod so that the camera was directly over the flower when taking the shot. After a couple of attempts i thought it was still a little too bright so i stood between the window and the box / flower when taking this image and the light was just right.

I then developed the image in CS5 and also used the TopazLabs filter pack in CS5.

It's quite hard to describe how i made the box so if i get a chance over the next day or two i'll grab a couple of pics of the box showing exactly what it is / what it looks like etc....

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Dave.

Ok as promised.... Here's a couple of pictures of the converted wine box.... The slots on the side can be either closed as i used in this shot or you can open them to create a side lit shot.

And one of how the shot was actually taken....
