Curious whine

Featured Replies

I've a 07 plate Elegance estate, 40k, and in my possession for 2 months.

It has a whine which occurs for a brief rev range around 1000 revs and again around 1500 revs when the engine is cold - the amplitude isn't loud and is in the engine, not the drive train. It doesn't seem really possible to locate it under the bonnet. As the engine warms up the amplitude drops till it isn't apparent. But I only need to have the engine off for a small time for it to reappear when the car is run again.

Any ideas ?

Maybe turbo whine or possibly the alternator.

Or the air con, or the PAS, or an idler or tensioner wearing out.

Does it happen when the air temp is below 5C? If not, it's probably not the air con compressor, but could be the drive pulley.

It's the fact that it is so engine rpm specific that is puzzling. It lasts barely 50rpm and then it's gone only to re-appear just that bit further up the rev. range. It has changed slightly too in that at one point it was 1200 and then 1500revs, now the first appearance is 1000 revs.

I've got just over a fortnight till the 3 months warranty is up and would like to get some idea before I go rattling cages. From the lack of response I'm now guessing that this isn't a Octy 2 'feature'.
