Brand new alloys are going

Featured Replies

It's a shame but I've come to the decision to get rid of my alloys although only being on the car a week, reasons being there on 25mm pcs adapters which I don't like plus the wheels are sticking out of the body work (illegal) lots of wheel wobble and the offset is pushing the inside wall dangerously close to the suspension arm.

So I'm after some advice, I've got in mind the 312 brake mod, what size rim should I go for 16 or 17 I defiantly need/want more rubber on the road but that would come down to the width right? I swear with the 8.5 inch wide alloys at the mo have really slowed the car down. Also any good websites for alloys my budget is about 700 with tyres though, I really want a nice set of tyres with them, been on wheelbase I think and they offer toyo proxes any good? I'm after advice as well as points of view as I made a complete gash up on the set I've got.

How much we talking?

spiders/tt comps/bbs reps...17x 7.5 with 215-40-17's.

Depends what colour, solids will be cheaper than pearl or metallic :)

I'll pop them up here for sale when they're in my grubby mitts

Which wheels do you have?

I've got in mind the 312 brake mod, what size rim should I go for 16 or 17

The early Mk1 Octavia vRS came with 16" wheels so there should be no need to go to 17" for 312 mm discs unless you can find some wheels that are especially light, or unless it is for aesthetic reasons.

A Skoda wheels brochure I have shows a range of 16" wheels for the Fabia, all are 6.5" wide ET42, (that is, the same as stock), for use with 205/45 tyres. Having wider wheels adds extra unsprung weight, making the car less nimble and slower to accelerate.

My opinion, FWIW, would be to keep to the standard discs and change to 15" wheels, (185/55 or 195/50), with the aim of making the car more nimble and responsive. I'd even look into 14" wheels to see if they fit, (185/60).

wouldnt 15's look a bit small and off looking? not after the speed want it to look good aswell?

wouldnt 15's look a bit small and off looking?

It's a matter of taste. Most, if not all Fabias except for the vRS appear to have had 14" wheels as standard. I don't think they look especially bad.

What's most important to me is driving feel. I find larger and/or wider wheels and tyres, because they are nearly always significantly heavier, tend to make for stodgy handling. I realise I'm an outlier in this and most people are more concerned about looks. In this you could say I'm a driving enthusiast rather than a car enthusiast.

You just have to get the balance right. IMO anything smaller than 16's look silly, it handles well on them, and looks good. 15's look too small, while they might well handle better, and I'm pretty sure 312's don't fit under them. 17's look nice, but are a bit more heavy so could affect handling again.
