pencil /ignition coils

Recommended Posts

hi all,

I have been reading through the service history of my new fabia and cant find refference to the spark plugs ever being changed. I there for decided to whip em out and have a butchers at them. This is where i hit the snag.... How are you supposed to remove the pencil coils? In the haynes it says skoda has a specialist tool (news to skoda apparently) I went to the local parts specalist for vw and they said there was one but wanted 75 quid for it and would take at least a month to order as it would have to come from germany!!!

is there any other way of getting these coils out with out running the risk of damaging em.

sorry for the silly question but all my experience on working with cars has been older ones with carbs and dizzy caps or the rover i had (the coils were bolt on)

thanks in advance

Coop

In my Haynes manual it says just make up a 'tool' from a bit of welding rod. You just need some stiff wire and bend it into an L shape. Put the short part of the L under the coil pack and tug hard, upwards. Worked for me. No need whatsoever for a special tool.

Hope this helps.

Coathanger wire might be a bit on the thin side, but you could try. Something a bit thicker would be better. I happened to have some some mild steel rod, just a bit thicker than coat hanger stuff.

All you need to do is bend one end of the wire/rod to go under the top of the coil pack, and bend the other end to give you something to pull on. Mine came off easily. Also, it will help if you undo the plastic clips that hold the wires to the coil packs first. No need to unplug the coil packs from their wires (on the 1.4, at any rate). They can be laid to one side while you change the plugs.

I'd say that that will not work for the 1.2/1.4 coils as they kind of fit flush with other bits, the bent wire will though - just make sure thast you pull up close in towards the centre of the sort of triangular area away from the connector. Also, as suggested, unclip all the plastic bits that keep the wiring harness tightly down as these coils are quite long and so a lot of free cabling is needed. Maybe take a note of the numbers on all the coils and keep that so that you can work out if they have been replaced already - part of the numbers will be a manufacturing date code which should be easy to work out.
