Things that go bump in the night

Featured Replies

Hello All,

My 2000 Felicia 1.9D went through its MOT last week complete with something bumping in the front left suspension. I don't think it's a ball joint as neither my mechanic (who checked the car before the MOT) nor the inspector at the DVLNI test centre (who did the MOT test) picked up anything amiss. Given that it passed the MOT, it shouldn't be anything too serious but I still get this heavy bumpimg noise from the front left as I turn to the right on a bumpy road.

It only happens on the right turn, not to the left or in a straight line. The handling seems fine despite the noise.

I've had a poke around with a metal bar putting leverage on the suspension components but can't find any free play. The mileage is 167,000.

Any help, much appreciated.

It could be a worn bush..

i'd put money on it being the top mount rubber.

or the top mount bearing?

might also be a engine/box mount?

Thanks guys. Am I right in saying that the way to check bushes and top mounts is to jack up the front of the car and try to wobble the strut?

(With the car on axle stands of course!)

a tenner on it being a ball joint, even if you think its not :p
