Newish here vRS mk1

Featured Replies

Hey how's everyone doing?

I'm kinda new, been registered for a while but never really posted.

Had my mk1 vRS for about 3 weeks now and loving it. However just been out for a quick run out and found it misses slightly occasionally in 3rd at around 3.5 - 4k rpm.

Also seemed to be holding back in 2nd a little bit. Not massively but noticeable nonetheless. First time I've noticed it do this, first I thought it might be clutch slipping but it's not increasing the revs without accelerating, and was fine in other gears. Just not pulling as much as usual in 2nd.

I'm not even sure if it's just cos I've gotten used to the power now so am not quite as taken aback by it lol

For the record its a '51 plate with 63k on the clock.

Could be a few things,1 try cleaning the throttle body take it off and use carb cleaner..2,Coil pack 3.MAF take it off and clean it also with carb cleaner donot wipe it you could break the needles...4,Plugs do you know when they where done last??How does the car idol is it smooth? If you do a search on here there is a post telling you how to do t/b cheers

Cheers for that fella, using me iPhone at the minute so searching can be a ball ache lol.

As for the idle it's probably the smoothest idling car I've had tbh. Will look into the service stuff to see when the plugs were last changed and what they are. Still need to have a good look under the bonnet aswell, just not had chance yet. And I don't like messing with stuff I dont know a lot about :)

also check pipes for boost leaks and scan the car for fault codes. Throttle body clean would be a good start and is a cheap job.

As mentioned, sounds like classic coilpack issue.

That is what I think too,but if the other stuff has not been done it is worth doing it..If there was a vaccum leak the idol would not be that smooth,it would be better if you had a boost gauge cause you would know for sure if you had a vac leak...

Might have to wait till the weekend now due to long hours at work but I will look into the easier (free/cheap) stuff first then try and eliminate the other stuff after. Thanks for the help people.

Best advice for you to do your own troubleshooting is a VAG COM cable from ebay to scan the ECU if you have a laptop.

Been thinking about looking into that anyway tbh Liverpool-Lad.

I know a mate of mine has it already. Just dont see him very often.

Welcome to the Briskoda site buddy and glad you like your new motor.

The symptoms on your car are some of the most common to get on the 1.8T engines in the VAG group. And not always easy to find exact symptom straight away.

Best bet is get a mobile diagnostics tool to read / clear any codes you may have. Rerun the car after clearing and see what still comes up. The code readers are under £20.

If no codes then go easiest and cheapest route first, like the TB clean. Most of us folks do that yearly now anyway.

Next check the coilpacks

Also check and change plugs if you not sure on last change

Check air filter also, and replace if needed

And it would not hurt to replace fuel filter, again if not know when changed.

These will all benefit your car.
