K&N AIR FILTER

Featured Replies

Remember reading that K&N have air filters suitable for the YETI. Had one in my last car, a Seat Ibiza 2 litre GTI and rated it for both economy and performance. Does anyone have an opinion or experience of using them in a diesel or better still a Yeti?

Thanks.

this is discussed quite frequently over on the fabia mk1 section, its known that no significant improvement in power is achieved as diesel engines run on excess air so increasing the air flow has no desirable affect on performance altho it is known to reduce smoke but wouldnt be a problem on your dpf engine  i myself run an oem filter altho tried a k&n panel filter for a short while and the engine did breath easier higher up the revs 3000-4000. i reverted back to standard simply because i wanted to keep all the dust out as possible and once read an article about the massive holes that arise in the filters structure during the cleaning and re-oiling phase. also the oil is also known to cause MAF sensor issues which is very pricey if goes wrong. if you do decide to go for it, be sure to use as little oil as possible or go for one of these dry filters which require no oil, ie, green cotton and pipercross i believe. and another thing if you can remember remove the filter weekly and give is a good shake out if you have a compressor at hand give it a gentle blow to keep it in perfect condition rather than leaving it to say 10k intervals and then having a more significant cleaning process which may alter the structure and filtering capabilities of the filter.

I see no point in a high perf filter for a tubocharged diesel engine.

The slightly lower pressure drop is miniscule in relation to the other pressure losses from the intercooler etc., and the diesel engine is running with excess air anyway, so the poorer filtration and all the messing around is for nought.

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what I hoped for, someone in the know.

Not worth the risk so won't bother. I'll have to make do with remembering how much I enjoyed my 11 year's of fun with my K&N'd Ibiza.

Cheers

Thanks for your informed reply. I will take your advice and trouser the 40 quid it would have cost to buy a K&N. If you are visiting UK North East we'd like to see you in Darlo ( Darlington )

I have had one in my golf almost since I purchased it and also done the same with my yeti , both a tdi 140 engine and honestly have noticed a fraction of a increase in performance and mpg but not major until i fitted a variable chip from tune it on both cars.So is it a good upgrade or not ? well better filters are like better fuel if you can use it why not I always use the super diesels and always have in both cars and I generally achive about 50 to the gallon plus have a car that is as aerodynamic as a house brick and driven fairly quickly returning good mpg.
