late mk1 Superb safest engine?

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm so, so tempted to buy a Superb. No less than four year old. Want an Elegance, love the spec., may end up with something with a bit of mileage on it

But don't know what engine to go for. Heard about the problems with the 2.0 diesel. Is the 1.9 115 bhp a sound engine?

Appreciate any advice or comments.

Thanks

The 1.9 PD in whatever power output you want (130 BHP AWX is the best) is the only engine worth considering in any Mk I Superb.

The 2.0 PD engines self-destruct. This is yet another example of VAG selling to the public goods with a known serious defect. Passat and Audi 2.0 PDs have been failing regularly. Rain water ingress is another bogey VAG also knew all about.

The V6 diesel is old technology with consumption and emissions to match. It also has a very fragile fuel pump and requires hours of labour to change the belts. I can't think of any reason at all why anyone might buy a Superb with a petrol engine.

I bought my Superb as a cheap way of getting a big car with the AWX engine. The car's not really up to much - but the engine is a cracker and I'm pleased with it.

rotodiesel.
