Replacing odometer

Featured Replies

Hello again!

After a long time away from here, and taking my little Felly off the road, I am back and in need of a little help!

Firstly, after she has been left standing for months, with little maintenance being done and stuck under tons of snow for weeks on end, I am exceptionally shocked to announce that my Felly passed her MOT yesterday, with just 2 advisories for worn front tyres!!

Now here's the problem, the odometer is stuck! I need to clock my mileage for work and this problem is going to be a real pain. Does anyone know how easily these are replaced and where can I get a new one from??

Cheers guys!!

The car breakers yard, Skoda parts dept, or google for new/used speedometer.

Don't how to get around correcting mileage to match what is on your present speedometer?

I'd say breakers or eBay, since a brand new speedo is going to cost well over £100 from Skoda. There's enough Felicias around that you should be able to find one with a close enough mileage already on if that matters to you. The problem is caused by the plastic drive gears coming unstuck from their metal shafts, and isn't realistically fixable.

It's easy to remove a speedo from the cluster - just unclip the front cover/bezel then undo the 4 screws holding the speedo from the back. The 1.3 and diesel use exactly the same part (I don't know exactly how the 1.6 speedo differs, but it doesn't have the same part number) but be aware that cars built after around August 1999 have physically different parts which won't fit an older cluster without swapping various other parts as well (temp. gauge and light guide, at least). It might be easier to swap the whole cluster, in which case you'll want one from a post-facelift 1.3 (assuming you still have a '99 car) as the earlier ones don't have the lights-on warning buzzer built in (and the wiring for it in the dash is slightly different).

A working odometer isn't mandatory.

Ok, legal note out of the way. I'm sure the other posters are correct about how to change the unit. As for keeping an accurate vehicle mileage record if this really matters to you, take a photo of the "new" unit out of the car, and keep the old one as proof of mileage when exchanged.

Just swap out the whole dash panel for one with same engine and as Ken says just make some irrefutable record. The only potential legal problem comes if you try to pass off the car as having a lower mileage than it actually does.

Could you use Google maps route planner for now to find out how long a journey is?

I could have a quick look around the tiny scrap yard in Risca for you but it's so small I doubt they'd have a Felicia in there. I think there's a place in Ystrad Mynach that sells second hand car parts over the counter, sort of like a scrap yard that takes the parts off for you. Can't for the life of me remember what the place is called though.

Cheers guys!!

I am not really bothered about what the damn thing says about the miles already covered but I tend to be all over the place with work...sometimes it's a right pain using a route planner to work out the miles I've covered, I just want to push the little button and forget about it! :)

Its an easy and cheap fix (20 mins and approx £36) I recently swapped mine over after ordering a speedo from Jorily.
