Handbrake Adjuster Problem

Featured Replies

My handbrake has never been much good so 2 weeks ago I changed the rear discs and pads as they were very worn and ridged.

Thought by now the handbrake would have improved so I took the centre console out to adjust the handbrake to find this.........

As you can see the cables are different lengths so are not pulling evenly when the handbrake is applied - has anyone else come across this problem or know the solution?

That's why you have that yoke connecting the cables to the adjuster nut and studding, to accomodate different length cables. If it bothers you, or you can't get a satisfactory LH bite, you should be able to adjust the cable lengths at the brake calipers using the pinch bolts. If you've ever looked at a bicycle brake, they're like that only heavier.

As Ken said, that's why the metal bar is there - To compensate for different length cables.

Having said that, the left one (pass side) does look really long, almost as if it is touching the armrest brakcet.

Try adjusting it the caliper like Ken said.

Thanks guys, will probably try and adjust the passenger side to shorten it to match the other one if that's possible.

mines was the exact same only my handbrake it's self was only held by one out of the 3 nuts retaining the handle had to have my handel welded to the car it's self but in the process i just done the hand brake cables, shoes and also fitted new springs, the drums where tatty but still work, it might be the case the one of your cables are streetched, good thing you can buy them one by one :D

Mine was set like that but mine was due to the handbrake sticking at the caliper end, this was sorted by cleaning the back of the caliper and manipulation of the actuator on the caliper. On mine it is down to gradual failure of the seal o-ring on the actuator. :(
