Can someone shed some light?

Hey guys,

I recently had my car remapped at Unit18, which was a great decision btw. However it has brought some problems/issues along with it. Mainly the lack of performance lol.

I had it rolling roaded recently to find its barely making 150bhp (it was 146 as standard) but it making around 295lb/ft. I have been told that the vanes in the turbo seem to be sticking, so Ive bought a Innotec turbo cleaning kit to try to temporarily fix the problem until I make the move on a new turbo.

My first question is has anyone experienced this product before, and if so:

1. Did it work?

2. What kind of place can carry out the work?

I dont fancy tackling the job myself for many reasons, so I need to find a good place in my area to carry it out.

As a side topic, Ive also purchased a set of Samco boost pipes for the car, however one side of the top 90 degree bend doesnt fit. The side that connects to the original boost pipe is the same size as both connectors that are installed on the bend, but the connection at the EGR(?) end is bigger. Ive contacted Samco but they say on their system both sides are the same size, but they will replace one connector if I can tell them the size of it. So basically does anyone know the size of the pipe im talking about, and has anyone had this happen before?

Sorry for the long post, and I appreciate your time for reading, thanks. Ross.

Sticking VNT on turbo really needs stripped down to clean properly. Dental picks and scotchbrite, and hands that will never been clean again.

Also worth checking the N75 valve is supplying enough vacuum to operate the VNT actuator. VNT can also be checked with a vacuum pump.

WRT the boost hoses, need to know if it's an ASZ or BLT engine. BLT has ASV before EGR and the pipework is slightly different. ASV on the ASZ engine is part of the EGR.

ASV = Anti Shudder Valve, vacuum operated on ASZ. Electrically operated on the BLT engine.

Also, ensure the actuator is lubed up well - GT85 spray, or similar helps to ensure it moves fully. A sticky actuator can give the same overboosting symptoms as it isn't opening up the vanes, when vacuum is eased off at full power.

Thanks guys. The N75 was something we first considered when looking over the boost pressure numbers seen on Vagcom. I was told the best place to start was with the cheapest option which is the cleaning option, so I think Ill explore this option further with the guy that did my RR, who said he can do the work for ~£100.

I will discuss the actuator with him also, as Im sure this is something he will be able to check during the cleaning process.

I believe my engine is an ASZ code (its a 2004 '54') so what would that mean in terms of piping size?

egr is 57mm i believe

It will be an ASZ engine yes.

could be a mapping issue?

a few have had niggles with washbrook maps not putting out the bhp they quoted, namely 20 bhp down which corresponds with your figures

Cheers guys.

Jase, Im not sure if it is the mapping issue, the Vagcom reading show that after 3500rpm or so, the turbo is overboosting to around 2 bar, then returning to normal at around 3800, but the power reaches its peak at around 3300 then tails off. If im correctly informed this is due to the turbo. Bearing in mind my car is on 85000 miles on its first turbo so that is most likely to be the case. I certainly wont rule it out though, and if i do find it to be the case ill be paying them a visit for another map, or a refund

I'm sure they've mapped standard vRS' hundreds of times without problem so I think that's unlikely IMO.

Also just to add, ive just measured the pipe I received from Samco, and it is 57mm as you say it should be, however it is a good 3mm or so too small, and will not fit in the egr. Is there a possibility it could be 60mm?

could be... all i know is the egr delete's you get are usually 57mm

My shed light is just on the right as you go in.
