Interference

Featured Replies

OK, new system went in the car this week to replace the one that was stolen before. Previous system had the amp running just the sub, with speakers running from the HU. New system has everything running from a 5 channel amp. There's an electrical whirring noise coming thtough the speakers that rises and falls with the engine note - I didn't hear this before when they were running from the head unit. This sounds to me like poor noise suppression - any potential suggestions?

Cheers

It's the earth. You need a better one.

What? Move planets?

Muppet :haha:

JUT,

I had this on mine, the whine went up and down with the revs. Turned the gain down on the amp and it went away, but that rather defeated the point of having an amp

At the suggestion of Paul, I created another earth point. On mine I used the boot floor, drilled a 5mm hole through it, make sure there was nothing below, dremmeled it so it wwas bare metal and then put a nut and bolt through. Connected it up and hey presto, no more whine :D

Could be a caused by 'Michael Jackson'.................:fro:

......a frequent cause of Musical interference.....(allegedly)

Sorry, Jon,

Just joking....... When I started working with Americans, we used to have endless confusion over "earth" and "ground". We got into some surreal areas when it came to discussing electrical noise supression.

Phil

Where do you have the amp earthed? I normally try and use a factory ground point if possible. There's normally 2 or 3 in the boot somewhere under the trim. In the Leon there's one each side under the plastic shelf support plastic.

Pete

Factory ground point (or earth point for Phil ;) ) led to the noise. I tried the one by the rear light cluster and the CD changer one. In the end creating my own worked nicely :D

It's earthed on one of the seat bolts at the mo, but the earth cable is pretty puny. I'm thinking if I go for 4awg power and earth cables, and find a solid earth, it should sort it... hopefully.

Next question - how many of you use power caps? I know the power cable has to run from battery to cap to amp, but do you run the earth from earth point to cap to amp, or give the amp and cap their own earths? p.s. I know some people don't agree with using them, but I do ;)
