ABS and other faults on Fabia

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Got the Mrs a 2003 1.4 Fabia a couple of month ago.

Had a few problems with it initially but then all seemed ok (or so she tells me!).

Well then i drove it 2 weeks ago and noticed all was not right! When driving the ABS seemed to be coming on at all times when breaking at slow speed. I've done a quick scout round this and other forums and found it may be related to the 40amp fuse breaking on top of the battery casing. I checked this and all was ok. This left me stumped and as i was short on time i took it to an independant garage who perfomed an OBD test. They informed me that it came back with a fault on the front left ABS sensor so the sensor was changed for a new one.

Received the car back and the fault had gone with ABS coming on, well for 30 mins it did.

Now every time the car is first turned on the ABS engages on braking, this is until the car seems to warm up then the ABS warning light comes up on the dash and car brakes as normal (but I would assume ABS unit is now not working due to fault light).

Rather than give the garage any more money to diagnose the faults I looked into how it could be done and I have purchased an OBD2 cable and VAG-COM myself.

I have done an Auto Scan on the car and have posted the results below.

As you will see the OBD is reporting back again that the front left sensor is at fault again. Obviously i know this is not the case as the sensor was changed 2 weeks ago.

Do any of the experts on here have any ideas what this could be from the logs I have shown below?

Also as shown in the logs I have a fault on the coolant temp sensor. Reading through other posts on here I believe this to be faulty (internal gauge is stickin gto the left as diagnosed by many others) so I plan to replace the sensor this weekend.

The other fault shown on the log is the Drive Battery Voltage, i sthis simply an indication that my main battery is slightly below the required level?

Any help much appreciated guys.

Hi, sounds like the same problem that I had after spending money on diagnostic checks from an independant "specialist"(lots!!) I had the ABS cutting in at low speed only, and the ABS sensors, wiring etc was all ok!! Turned out that it was the reluctor ring on the back of the bearing which had a dead spot!! (F88K knows how?) First jack car up look at where the ABS sensor and reluctor ring are (behind the hub carrier and infont of the CV joint) clean with meths remove any dirt etc using a cotton bud and meths if this does not solve it then you have to replace the whole hub flange/wheel bearing/ reluctor unit as all one unit!! buy skoda part only and get it replaced at a skoda dealership!!

hi mate,

thanks for reply.

The reluctor ring you are talking about, is this next to the sensor or actually part of ECU main module?

Also some of the parts you have mentioned have thrown me slighty. As a newbie to fabia do you know if there are any maintenance manuals kicking about that are readily available so i know where to start.

Cheers

Hi, Moggytech answered it!! Reluctor ring is an orangeyish coloured rubber look ring on back of hub, not a separate item as part of hub/bearing unit. Only visable if you look along driveshaft into back of hub/brake caliper carrier.

The Ross-Tech Wiki is an excellent source of information for fault codes. You can find a link to it in a 'sticky' in our Diagnostics and VCDS forum. This is what it has to say about your fault codes:

http://wiki.ross-tec...00/P0116/000278

I recently had the 01598 fault on my Fabia vRS. The error code was triggered by the battery no-load voltage falling below 12.5V and was sorted by fitting a new battery (a 780A/77AH Bosch 12v Silver car Battery HSB096). The original battery was an AKUMA 61AH/540A one. Other than the error code which caught me by surprise, there were no indications of battery problems.

To measure the no-load voltage with a multimeter first disconnect the battery earth strap, wait 2 hours during which the battery must not be subjected to any load or charge, then measure the battery voltage which must not fall below 12.5V. If 12.5V or more are indicated, the battery is OK. If less than 12.5V, charge the battery then wait at least 2 hours after charging. Repeat the test. If the no-load voltage is less than 12.5V, change the battery.

My car's battery voltage was 12.27V connected, 12.35V disconnected, and 12.47V after 2 hours. Those figures didn't improve with charging.

Hi guys thanks for all the info it has been really helpful.

imanaged to get the coolant temp sensor swapped over with ease at the weekend so that was one problem sorted.

Then i ramped up the car to check the sensor ring on the front left wheel.

I found what i believe to be a damaged sensor ring on the wheel hub.

Below is a pic of the damaged section of the hub sensor ring:

My link

And this is the other section of the same ring:

My link

This led me to believe that I would need to replace the full wheel hub as per the recommendation previously.

This is when i started to get confused, as per the skoda manuals there are 2 different type of sensor rings, one which is seated inside the hub (for the front wheels) and one which is seated externally to the hub (for the rear wheels). this is shown in this exert from the skoda manual:

Sens ring

Now is it just me or does it look like I have the rear wheel type hub on the front of my car?

I also checked the right hand wheel and this was the same type of build.

I am just looking at the total wring thing altoghether or has there been some sort of bodge been done to my car?

Cheers

The drawing that you have is correct with front bearing/hub/reluctor ring unit showing the reluctor ring "embeded" in, and the rear unit with the reluctor ring "stuck-on". (it is still not removable/separate item). The photos show a creamish coloured plastic ring which appears to be loose as far as i'm concerned :swear: knows what that is!!! It could be part of the bearing unit?? The reluctor ring is an orangeyish coloured rubber ring look!!! So I think a pair of new bearing units for the front!!

In terms of your sensor make sure you check the thermostat next to the coolant temp sensor too - I replaced my sensor last week and the stat had broken from its plastic housing - parts are easily replaced and there's plenty of walk-through guides on here too.

In regard to the ABS, I haven't a clue.

In regard to your username,

Could still be a fault with sensor. Before spending £100 on hubs it may be worth borrowing a pair of sensors to check (you can't swop sides as they're different shapes). My OBD reader gets left and right reversed when reporting on sensors.

just had a word with the master tech. at bikerton skoda sheffield. he says if the hub/bearing has been replaced it maty not have been pressed in correctly & eased away slightly. causing the abs to kick in due to not being ligned up correctly. will update you later.
