how much brake fluid can i remove?

Featured Replies

going to change the brake fluid next weekend and usually i would use a syringe to drain the reservoir.

have read a few posts that state that if the fluid level drops a fault will show and it will need resetting by skoda.

my question is......how low before the fault shows?

thanks in advance.

Disconnect battery when draining and refiling with new fluid.

Ecu will never know, therefore no light.

Connect battery when job complete.

I've never heard of that before, I would have thought that at worst it would illuminate the red exclaimation mark on the dash which would go out as soon as the level is within limits. The level sensor works from a float in the cap so the light would come on with the cap removed or the sensor disconnected.

If you wanted to be really safe, avoid turning the ignition on whilst changing the fluid. Do not let the level drop below the minimum as you run the risk of getting air in the ABS block, if that happens you'll need to bleed it using VCDS or similar.

I've always used a Gunsons "Eazy-Bleed" which is a reserve bottle which you fill with the new fluid which has two hoses attatched, one which atatches to the main brake resevoir, the other to the nearest tyre to provide pressure. Then you just open each bled valve on each brake caliper until clean new fluid flows out!! Simples ;) Use about 1lt to 1.5lt just in case!

+1 excellent piece of kit.

I normally use a syringe to draw the level in the reservoir down to minimum and then use the gunson kit, quite straight forward.

The problem doing it this way is that the clutch takes fluid from higher up the reservoir than the brakes do.

You might end up having to bleed the clutch as well if you go too low with the fluid.

If you look at the right hand side of the reservoir you will see how high up the clutch fluid feed pipe is.I would lower the level to be about 10mm above the top of the pipe, also remember if you use jacks on the car this effects the top level of the reservoir!

might have been misled regarding the fault resetting thing :giggle:

thanks for the info chaps......will drain to just above the clutch feed pipe.

oh, and will bleed the clutch while i am at it.

I always bleed the clutch when I do the brakes. Also once you connect the eazi bleed I find it fills the reservoir back up. I just remove some fluid from the reservoir to make it a bit quicker.

Yep I'd use a turkey baster to empty as much as possible out of the reservoir, top up with fresh to between min and max and use gunson eezibleed (this will make the level higher once used).
