Thinking of buying SM - advice please

I am a newbie to the Forum however I have read many topics over the last week to get a flavour of the Yeti.

Last Friday I went for a test drive at Telfords, Carlisle, and am very eager to know more.

I am cosidering ordering the following:

White

Manual SE

2.0 TDI CR 110PS DPF

Rough road package

Hill hold

Off road

Light assist

Heated front seats

Heated front window

I would really appreciate any comments with reference to good/bad choice of options

I take it from the options your going for the 110 TDI 4x4 :yes:

Very similar spec to what I was considering but with the 140 engine and a couple of other options. Price took me very close to a basic 110 4x4 Elegance so went with that. However I still got carried away with a few 'essential' options like the heated screen and RRP :)

Only thing I'd add to that excellent spec would be TPM, particularly if your relying on gunk rather than opting for a spare. Hopefully give you time to save the tyre from being trashed, which will obviously render the gunk useless.

good spec :thumbup:B) i have ordered the same apart from the rough road package which i dont think i will need and mine will be black (swmbos input)

i would add mud flaps and mats rubber or textile and boot mat rubber the skoda one is good

all you have to do then is wait for a few months :( but it will be worth the wait :happy:

I have one on order from Telfords. I think the first option I would ask them is if they would supply you a car at the same price they supply them to Autofinders for people who buy via that internet site. They wouldn't give me any discount and I'm a bit sore having found out very recently on this forum that they have supplied some discount Yeti's to Autofinders when they told me not to buy from such people because they sourced cars from dodgy people.

Sensible options add mud flaps to protect the paint work and rubber mats for the interior. I originally had carpet mats but replaced them with rubber, far better for winter and cleaning.

Sorry to disagree with this one.

From 16 months ownership and two winters experience, the Skoda supplied mud flaps are a waste of time, the sides of the car still get covered in mud,crud and anything that is lying about. Rubber mats are a good idea but I would try Lidl before going to Skoda - you could probably dine out on the price difference!!

I agree in some respect that the mud flaps have been designed more for style than functionality but they do offer some level of protection and as such are a useful addition.

The Skoda rubber mats are very good quality, designed to fit the specific vehicle and offer excellent protection. Yes they are more expensive than what you might find in Lidl but having a quality vehicle I like to fit quality products. I don't think £30 is over the top.

Lidl oil is cheaper than VW, I wouldn't suggest putting that in the beast.

'Horses for courses' I suppose.

+ spare wheel. Alright if you need mega boot space take it out .....,but if you don't have one....Sods law says you'll pick up a nail in a new tyre in no time at all. :yes:

Many thanks for your replies.

I previously toyed with the idea of TPM but didn't see the necessity - fropm one of the posts I nowsee the value of slow puncture early warning if I don't opt for the spare wheel.

I was interested with the idea of getting the spare and removing when I need more boot space (which is usually every weekend when we head for the 'hills'). My question to this one is: If I remove the tyre is there a 'threaded bar' left sticking up in the middle of the boot?

The rubber mats are definitely a great idea and I note there is an excellent fitted Skoda boot mat with a considerable lip all the way round to contain any water from boots/jackets/dogs and can be easily removed for cleaning/emptying!

I also read on another thread (I've being doing a fair bit of research) that foldable electric mirrors (amongst other things) are being offered on the new '12' models - so I may just delay ordering until this is confirmed or denied.

Do you need 4x4?

I looked at the Greenline (1.6 CR) straight away, as I am to replace my Superb Greenline. You get a super green engine (very cool), low tax (very wallet friendly) and mega-economy (ditto).

What do you lose? Well you can't have 4x4 (wow - economy sapping and I never had a problem in the snow in 2wd Superb), you can't have a heated screen and you don't get a spare wheel. You get 5 PS less power (whoopee) and the same torque.

I reckon Greenlines are about to become the new Prius/Hybrid and will soon be driven by all the knowledgable celebs...

Are they the same celebs who take 25 first class flights per year promoting their films around the world whilst then being picked up in limos using 5mpg? What a marvellous selective conscience they must have.

Fair point about the Greenline but I wish they did it with the heated windscreen though.

Do you find the engine in your Superb copes okay? Is it noisy or not?

Yes - same celebs. Easing their conscience with a crap car that MUST create a bigger carbon footprint by being flown around the world 15 times in assembly...

My Superb has the 1.9 (greenline I) and I barely noticed the difference between it and the 2.0 PDI I had in my previous Octavia.

It pulls fine, is very quiet (I suspect more sound proofing on Superb) and gives me a regular 55+mpg on all types of driving.

I haven't ever had a heated windscreen, so I haven't missed it, but I could see how it would be useful. It wouldn't stop me ordering a car though - warm water and a scraper has always sufficed!

I haven't figured out why you can't have a heated windscreen in a Greenline, or why you can't have a spare wheel - you must be able to buy the spare later (I know it's part of the weight saving measures) and maybe the lowered ride height means it doesn't fit?? As for the screen, maybe the engine can't run it or it'll put emissions through the roof!

I was interested in the green option but we regularly go off road and some of the areas we drive really do need 4WD in the colder months - I was unable to ascend the country lane (for about 2 weeks) to my son's small holding due to the water 'run off' from the fields which turned it into a sheet of ice last Winter. He seemed to manage (just) in a Freelander, his neighbour was not so lucky - they were in a BMW X3 or X5 and had to park it in a field and come back the next day.

We were also unable to get to our usual haunts around the Lake District and resigned ourselves to the fact that we'd have to walk a colossal distance to get to a start point or wait till more clement weather!!

Fairy Nuff - So is the Land Rover 4x4 system therefore proved to be better than the mock 4wd in a BMW? And how would the Haldex (quattro) system stack up against it?

From experience; be just as good!!

I know the Freelander is not a "proper" land rover, but it's encouraging that the VW group haldex system is as good.

I think half the time the methodology of your driving dictates whether you succeed where others have failed. My son was a mechanic in the Army for seven years and 'played' with many a vehicle, (and I do mean 'play!') in all sorts of weather, on all sorts of terrain, which probably stood him in good stead on several occasions in snowy weather.

Ah but the downfall of playing with vehicles in the army is that they're much more versatile (if basic) and nearly always 4x4 or tracked!!

I have only ever owned one 4x4 (Jeep in Germany) and it was brilliant, if never truly tested in snow, ice or mud and all my fwd cars have been unstoppable in snow (although my steeply angled drive almost stumped the Superb last year).

If anyone is still watching this thread, I currently drive a Picasso which is absolutely useless at keeping the windows clear of condensation - how does the Yeti cope?

keep the air con on......

No problem at all in the Yeti, even with two lots of soaking wet rainsuits after a rally. if it does start to mist up I just stick the air con on.

Re your Picasso; when did you have the pollen filter changed last? On many cars these get forgotten and cause lots of problems.
