DRLs - not quite right?

Featured Replies

When I set the DRLs to come on I get headlights instead of the smaller lights down in the foglight cluster.

Am I doing something wrong?

How old is your Superb?

Nope - I think you're doing it right. I have exactly the same model (SE 140bhp) and my DLR's are based on headlights rather than the lower spots. Mine is a 2008/9 model and in the older model the DLR's are based on the main headlights - the lower based spots came in post 2009 I think....

On mine, with DLR's on the green 'main beam' indicator on the dash isn't on all the time, only when the auto-light sensor senses it is getting dark - then the real main beam comes on (along with the cornering fog lights)....

Hope this helps...

2009 model. That explains it. Thanks

Shame really, I don't want the headlights to be on permanently.

I'm sure you can make some changes on VCDS to make the smaller bulbs in the corner of the foglamp unit come on a DRL instead of the xenon beam, like on the Octavias. I haven't tried it on a 2009 Superb though.

I'll ask next time it's in for something.

Hopefully it is possible, I haven't got a Superb here to test it on.

I imagine it's under convenience and then adaptions. Next time I have a Superb in of that year I shall have a look myself.

2008 and 2009 dont have the smaller bulbs in the foglights, mine does not and instead has a huge chrome surround at the edge.

Maybe you can't then. Bit of a phail on my part then!

As above, earlier Superbs use dimmed headlights for DRL's.

Later models have a seperate dedicated 13W bulb either side of the fog light...

It's actually a 21w bulb (P21w - 1156)

Must just be the Yeti that gets the new dedicated 13W long life DRL bulb...

Is the example shown on an Elegance? Will it be the same on a new SE?

Both the SE and Elegance get front fog lights as standard so yes a new SE will have the 21W DRL's next to the fog lights...

This explains why my neighbour's front fogs are always on - his Superb is newer than mine (09 plate, his is 59). I couldn't even remember how to access the VCDS the other day to check what I've switched on!

Out of interest, what is wrong with having the lights on - I think it's sensible. Germans do it along with many other Northern European countries - combats the perpetual darkness from low seasonal light or poor weather. It still rankles with me when it's hacking witrh rain, early morning or low light in the evening and so many cars are pootling around without lights on. Driving slowly without lights in low light = dangerous and obviously driving quickly the same.

I've read on this forum somewhere else that it might look like your car's headlights are on and on their normal setting but they are in fact on at something like 5 to 10% of their night time power. So you are using a LOT less energy to power them than if you had just switched your lights on. [They are only needed to make you visible and not to actually light the road ahead of you - hence the reduction in power usage.] Furthermore all the interior lights don't go on as well nor do the rear lights.

My DLR's are based on the dipped headlights, but not at full power. Interestingly under the old system (like on my car) the rear lights come on as well, which seem like a sensible thing in my book. With the new DLR's based on the fog light the rear lights remain off - I think I prefer the old way! Some months ago a guy drove into me - I was able to say I'd got my lights on so there was no excuse of not seeing me!

Quote from owners manual Skoda MkII, 03/ 2008 page 54:

When the daylight driving lights are switched on, also the low beam with reduced

brightness shines together with the side lights (approx. 92 % of the performance).

This contributes to a longer life of the lamps for the low beam.
