Fitting a new steering wheel

Featured Replies

Im interested in fitting a new steering wheel, something like a nice OMP one. I know i'll need a boss to fit it, but how do i actually remove the old one and fit the new one without setting off the airbag and killing myself?

Cheers

What are you going to do about the airbag?

As the airbag warning light will be on?

I would leave as is to be honest, the VRS wheel is quite nice imho

Unless your fitting a racing seat and harness I would not bother, it may save your life one day. Its a good looking wheel anyway. If you want something more chunky what about an R32 wheel?

Since you'll need to remove the existing wheel unless you decide to keep it, disconnect battery then go for a "teabreak". Airbag will now be safe to work with.

I've got a mono wheel and boss fitted (no harnesses or bucket seats :wonder: )

As said disconnect the battery for 10 minutes before removing the wheel, the new boss will come with a resistor to disable the airbag light so alls good

Simple to remove steering wheel, You can keep battery connected, but disconnect if you feel unsure.

To remove steering wheel you need to turn the wheel 90' then insert a small flat screwdriver into a hole in the back of the steering wheel and twist upwards. This will unclip the plastic lug holding one side of the airbag to wheel. then turn wheel back to centre and then another 90' the opposite way and again insert screwdriver into back of wheel as before.

This will then unclip the airbag, so get ready to hold it.

It will still be attached by 2 wires. Carefully unclip those connectors and remove airbag

Then just undo steering wheel centre bolt(torx bolt) and remove wheel.

most good after market steering wheels will have a resistor to dissable the airbag.
