Blown head gasket

Featured Replies

:'(

After having a lot of things fixed this winter (rear dampers, starter switch, clutch cable) I recently noticed loss of coolant but no visible leak. Just got the verdict from the garage.

But since there's nothing else amiss with Fellie save a little rust on the wheelarches and the tailgate, and there's still a bit to go before I reach the 80,000 miles mark, I guess I'll just have to pay up shudder.gif

How much is it going to cost?

it's not that bad a job to do DIY on those old swedish  you could kill two birds wit one stone and change the water pump and timing belt kit at the same time whilst it's all apart

That was done last year :p

Had it been the 1.3 and if I had proper tools and a workplace, then maybe... No idea about the cost but alternatives are more costly (unless you want to do a huge amount of welding you'll have to pay at least £1,500 for a Felly over here).

Hmm, I see a business oppurtunity sliding along here....... ;)

The thought has struck me  I just haven't come up with a profitable method for LHD conversion ;)

That's all the cheap ones on ebay going to Sweden LOL.

Does it *have* to be LHD out there?

No, but I'm afraid RHD won't attract that many buyers :p

Just stick "Special Edition" on the back ;-) ;-)

Brilliant idea

For some cars, RHD is probably considered an asset (e.g. a Jaguar XK120). Why shouldn't it work just as well for a Felly? :giggle:

....or "Easy Kerb Access Edition" ;-)

OK, here's the bill:

Gasket kit £138 :o

Bolts £30

Resurfacing £65

Liquid gasket, coolant, oil, oil filter £83

Labour £232

VAT £137

Total £685 :S

jeez, it would have been not half of that to fix it over here :'(

maybe we should set up an international brisky parts courier system?

Price for labour, resurfacing, bolts, liquids was no surprise. I guess it's a fixed price for the job, when my garage charge per hour it's £45 IIRC, which means that I've paid for 5 hrs, not unreasonable. "Branded" synthetic motor oil is £10 per litre...

The shock was the price for the gasket kit. My garage is a small "fix all brands" shop but affiliated to a chain of garages/spare part shops, using parts of decent brands (monroe dampers, mintex brake pads &c) - but still! It could have been worse, though: gasket kit for SWMBO's Octy (1.6 AKL) is £210 :o :o :o

Head needed quite a bit of resurfacing, more than 1/32". So now the compression ratio is improved and I can stick a vRS badge on the grille

What's noticable is that it runs much smoother, especially after cold start. Maybe MPG figure will improve? whistling-1.gif

I wonder how much one would have been mail order to you from Jorily here in the UK?

1/32"... christ almighty, i'd have thrown that away.. i hope they reseated all the valves too otherwise that WILL cause you problems again sometimes in the future

Ooops sorry - tried to avoid metrics and stumbled in conversion. :p

Resuracing took 0.1 millimeter, not 1.0 - or 0.004 inch

0.1... that's nothing, i've seen them much worse that that, but alas your 1/32 would have been 0.8mm (ish)
